SH/W 1 Waipara - beach access

Post by philux »

Just wondering what the go is about this going from the state highway to the beach. Is any of it private or a no go zone? Was thinking might go down there sunday and head back up monday, if anyone is intrested in tagging along let me know.

Cheers Phil

Hey there, there is one area half way down the river from SHW1 to Double Corner Rd Bridge known as "the Horshoe" that is a no go. I believe this land is private and is being frequently cut up by people. Stick to the riverbed around here.
See this pic, the area is circled in red. http://www.offroadexpress.co.nz/images/albums/album457/Waipara_Horseshoe.jpg

At the mouth there is a track that leads North up the beach to the cliffs. Stick to the track here, stay out of the mud and off the beach, makes a nice drive to finish off the day and only takes 5 minutes or so.

Ok people, move along. Nothing to see here. Thank you, move along.

you can normally get to the beach by following the river down, you dont have to go on private property BUT, the last bit from the riverbed onto the top of the beach is sometimes full of water, there is a track you can follow round to the left but if the water hasnt been getting out and is backed up, then pretty much no beach access. I saw a navara go across there one day towing a boat and he had water coming in the windows (idiot) but got through! So pretty solid but might want to wade it first. Once you get onto the beach its cool right down the end.

we crossed the lagoon last weekend on the training day. it usually has a very hard bottom but the bank on the other side can be a little soft. water wasnt very high at all last weekend so you should be fine.

Have to go with Pete on that one. It has become a hot issue of late. The river can be a good challenge in that area as it is soft in places=good opportunity to get more experience. Drove back along part of the beach last weekend and it was't too soft, just the tide was a little too high for my liking. Have fun
