opinion?

Post by fish »

im looking to get another truck but not sure what to buy, when asking peoples opinion on makes and models they all say "na theyre crap dont get that get this" refering to another type of truck. ask someone eles theyll say the oposite, and so on.
so whats the deal, lots of people tend tp have nissans and toyotas, but fewer with mitsis and isuzus, my price range alows for these, not so much
for the others. i like the style of troopers and pajeros, but am i just asking for trouble?
cheers......................

Go a safari dude. Might be a pig of a thing to drive, but you get used to it, I have driven worse. Pretty much indestructable and with a little coinage spent on basic mods, ie lift, tyres, snorkel and front lokka you can pretty much go anywhere.

I have a Patrol and a Pajero. The Patrol is an easier truck to make very capable for alot less coin. I agree with you though the Paj and Isuzu are better looking. The Paj I bought has factory rear diff lock, so it does go fairly well. I find I choose which truck I take, depends on weather I need lots of articulation for the run I am on. If going for a diesel Nissan either allow money for a turbo installation or buy one with a turbo on it. You can kid yourself that you wont need more power, but in the end, by the time you put tyres bigger than 31" on it will be a pig on hills. Also it is easier to get big tyres under a Nissan. The Nissan is a tougher truck. You will kill the Paj or Isuzu before the Nissan.

Really you can make anything go well and most will be very capable vehicles.

The Landcruiser and Safari can have a lot of kit on them from the start (front and rear lockers coils all round winch) and are very capable but I have seen Hilux's and Pajero's go through stuff that the bigger truck's sank in and had to winch through.

Go with the way it looks and drives onroad, the number of seats rou require, if you can find places for the accessories you want and if the parts are cheap and easily available. When you have your decision find someone with the one you chose and ask what the pitfalls are.

"Hilux has leaf springs and you need a neck brace" but I love mine  and will not be getting rid of it any time soon, simple mods tried and true, and it has a tray so no need for a trailer.

Of the Bighorn and Pajero I have driven both and the bighorn has the space but the Pajero was better offroad but more modified and V6 petrol. Steve (Supralux) is putting a chev in the front of a bighorn and doing a SAS. Personaly for a coil sprung body like you are looking for I think a Discovery or Range Rover it has the V8, parts are OK and modifications are available, cost more tho....

Good luck

I have heard nasty things about the 2.4 dsl and longevity - the 2.8 seems to be a better bet. My father had a 2.8 - it was ok - the whole thing seemed a bit overweight (but then again, I drive a suzuki....)

The 2.8 Isuzu is a good motor they go fore ever, seen them in company utes 450 ks plus rolled boled and arse holed from day dot with stuff all oil changes. As or off road parts they may not be cheep or easy to get hold off as there are few done up here in nz. Cheep and reliable is safari, hilux or cruiser and suzuki, prarts every where second hand and after market
