Xmas 8O

Thats adventurous and optimistic....

Saw the post on OuterL - looks like a good plan...

Are the flipped front arms going to make a huge clearance difference? Or are you flipping to get the right angles as well? There isn't a huge amount of room in between your diff head and the spring perch... With the standard rangie set up i don't think I have ever been hung up on a leading arm.

Progress pics would be good - but as you are pushed for time we will settle for a comprehensive wrap up post with heaps of pics... :D

Just curious - how are you lifting the bodies on and off?

I flipped the front basically because I could. When we've been out rock bashing its amazing how the smallest things bring you to a halt so every advantage is taken 8)

The hi-steer kit means the tie rod will hit the chassis before the arms ( actually bump stop will hopefully work first ) I decided to put the spring pads above the front arms to give me more room.

I have got the front plates and chassis mounts in place tonight and started on the panhard which should hopefully be sussed by tomorrow night. Then I can finalise the springs and towers. I will take camera tomorrow and get some update pics.

It only took 1.5 hours to get bodies off - used 8000lb winch and a couple of truck strops from a big tree :D

Now that is class - exactly what I wanted to hear... 8)

None of this - my mate has a full workshop with hoist/lifts etc. and I stood back and watched - rubbish :D

So is the body still hangin from the tree outside?

PICS :!: :!:

I hope you don't lose too much flex afta all this effort, the three link is not the most flexible setup, it is what I have on my coil zook. It relies on the compression of the rubber in the control arm bushes on the axle to allow articulation. Whatever you do, do not put urethane bushes in, they do not compress like rubber does. One little trick you can do on the trail to allow extra flex is undo one of the control are bush bolts to allow the articulation to occur without requiring the bushes to deform. This is equivalent to a 'wristed radius rod/arm' [hint: do a search on this]

Some guys with rigs like mine are going to an a-arm setup like is in the rear of a vitara - these do away with the need for a panhard and you can substitute the bushes for rose/johnnie joints for unhindered flex movement.

The coil rear surfs are a fivelink from memory...

Happy ?
Yep very, nice to complete the beast before xma trips and take it out and thrash it :)

Changes ?
I will probably do some more work on the front bushes to get some more travel but no hurry for that !

Different ?
No I can't think of anything I would do differently, I had to remind myself that I'm building a rock toy for NZ conditions and not for the US trails which dominate the web stuff. Also had to remember we have no rock comps here so I concentrated on a solid trail toy. Maybe I will do more mods if someone gets some comps going that arn't dominated by mud !

My hat is of and a loud round of appluse is in order... I must say that was a great job and the out come was well worth it. I only hope that the 2 door ute conversion and 6ltr leyland mod to my rangie can match. :D :D :D

Awsome bit of engineering there!
I'm just blown away you managed all that in 2 weeks, I'd be measuring and remeasuring before I tacked anything and I'd be checking everything after aswell, worried about how it would handle on the road at speed :?

Impresssive pics :) it obiously goes well offroad!

Looking forward to seeing what it can do with better bushing

Well done

Thats pretty impressive mike. Do you think you could post afew pics of how your front sway bar is mounted? Seem too be having abit of a mental block and just can't picture how mine should be mounted.
Once I've done that the suspension is finished, then it'll be time to bolt it all back together. Haven't been getting much sleep lately (can't imagine why  ) matbe thats the problem!!!
