Newf from Up-over

Hey all, I'm currently in the Seattle, Washington area but am moving to the Christchurch area this August. I'll be looking at 4wd activities in general and probably asking questions about buying when I get there. Can't wait to get my hands on one of the cool diesel-powered rigs you have there, none of which are available here.

I'm a geotechnical engineer, so I always own a 4x4 for work and pleasure, usually a mix of camping, commuting and crap road access to job sites. I will be looking most likely at the Surf/Bighorn/Terrano style, but who knows?

I might occasionally be of help with knowledge of American 4x4s and engines as I have personally owned and worked on (all 4x4):
International Scout (x2, one with 345 cu. in. International, one with a 400 cu. in. Chevy I put in)
1985 Chevy Suburban (now with a 500 cu. in. Caddy my dad put in)
1987 Chevy K5 Blazer (5.7L)
1992 Chevy S-10 (4.3L)
1989 Isuzu Trooper (2.6L)
1992 Nissan Pathfinder (3.0L)
1984 Toyota pickup (2.2L)
1997 Honda CR-V (please don't tell anyone)
1977 Jeep Cherokee Chief (modded 401 cu. in. AMC)
2003 Chevy K2500 HD (6.0L)

Consider this an opportunity to convince me of the virtues of your favorite brand and convert me into one of your own! :wink:

Sorry, can't help with the heads up, but I can help you earthquake-proof your house (for a small fee). :wink:

Diesels might not be all that, but my current Nissan Pathfinder with 3L gas V6 gets between 14 and 19 mpg, what does the 2.7L diesel get, 25 to 30mpg? And diesel is $1/liter versus $1.50/liter for gas?

Add on the 20c a litre road tax, plus the oil and filter change every 5000k's plus the 4x cost in overhauling them, its not really worth it for a truck that is used primarily offroad in my opinion. I have both, A 1kz diesel (not bad get up and go) and rover v8, i know which i prefer driving thats for sure, and it aint the diesel :wink:
