Nissan R50 terrano fuel economy and fuel savers

Post by Satch »

Hi all

I have a 97 nissan terrano R50 with the Qd32 3.2 intercooled turbo motor. It has 22000 kms (not a typo)

I have recently begun questioning my fuel economy and have started running a spreadsheet on it Im finding im getting about 8.46 km/L or 11.82L/100km or 19.9mpg.

This seems very low to me considering an article in NZ 4wd had a road test in the same model truck doing 9.4km/L or 30mpg

this is about 550km from full to the fuel light

so wheres my 10mpg gone on such a young motor?

i have recently installed an eco tube or diesel preheater. Its to early to tell if its made a difference or not but my first impression would be a small increase in economy however on the occasion that i run a large portion of hydraulic oil in the gas (its free) it runs ALOT better due to thinning the oil out i presume.

So what i ask is your guys thought on this, what sort of economy do you get in you r-50 or other?

and has anyone else preheated their fuel?

thanks heaps

oh and also ive upgraded the tyre size a bit and put a 2 inch lift on, but have factored in the increased distance travelled per tyre revolution.

strange huh

I used to have an R50 with the 2.7 Td motor, It got around 450km around town and upto around 650km to the tank on a trip. Not the most economical vehicle around. It was an Auto with 30-9.5/15 tyres and 2 inch lift.

My Safari which is a manual 4.2 gets around 19MPG around town and up to 27 MPG on a long trip.
Not sure if that helps you.

Sounds pretty good milage. Is the Safari stock?
Im tossing up between the Terrano and Safari. Its taking awhile for various reasons.
Our TD27 2wd Navarra is about 11-12L/100km. Slow but steady!

lift + tyre size increase will explain the difference in fuel useage.
running it on hydraulic oil will likely alter the figures too.

I have an R50 Pathfinder, 1997, TD27ETi auto and totally stock with ten times the miles yours has, and get about 12L/100km around town, a little better on long trips, worse when towing trailers up hills. To be honest that's about what I'd expected to get.

They must have been driving carefully on that road test, that or the QD32 is significantly better on fuel than the TD27.
