Turbo questions

Post by DaveM »

A mate is in the middle of modding his Safari, and has bought a turbo setup for it (TD42).
The turbo has no waste gate, and the boost is limited by the fuel he's told.
Is this common, and is it safe to use without risk of engine damage?

Cheers

mines like that and its very common

alot of trucks run that set up
make sure you run a boost gauge and test how much boost comes on before you go bush

boost might be slightly higher climbing hills as more load is on the engine and produces more exhaust gas

Having owned a few turboed vehicles and worked on a few more if you could avoid that set up than do running a waste gate gives you that piece of mind that when you reach max boost its not going to spike for what ever reason and leave you walking out for a tow. But that is just me many people have many views but if you look at all new turbo set ups on nearly every newish diesel they all run waste gates they must have gone that way for a reason. sorry just my 2cents worth

i can partially agree with that
if the turbo is designed for the same size and type of engine then it should be fine
my turbo is off a 5liter cummins diesel
and i cant overboost no matter how much load i put it under
it does push a higher volume of air at a lower psi than a small turbo

line haul truck wouldnt run them if their was a danger of them over boosting if they tried to climb a really steep hill with alot of weight on

but saying that if u muck around with random turbos on engines things can go wrong
keep an eye on that boost gauge untill your sure you cant overboost
