Opinions wanted - Come-up winches
Opinions wanted - Come-up winches
I have been seeing a bit of marketing material for Come-up winches. Are they any good? This particular http://www.comeupwinch.com/en/pdt-dc-ds-9500.php looks very fast on paper. Anybody running them? Would you like to share your experiences so far.
Thanks

Yes these are the ones being marketed by ARB dealers.
8274 is reliable, but can't be fitted to an ARB front bar on a TJ without modifications to the bar (not my first priority).
As for getting, well that is what I want to know - without having to buy something, I wanted to hear people's experiences with it.
Otherwise I am very tempted with the Warn 9.5ti

That is what the theory is. ARB dealers do have to maintain their reputation, so can't be selling sub-quality products.
Apparently, Come-up is the original equipment manufacturer for Superwinch and has been making winches for 40 years.
Prices for Warn winches from US are very good (particularly given our exchange rate now). Talked to Fully Equipped, but their prices are still somewhere on the top floor of a highrise building.

The Come-Up winch range is very good, but you can not compare it with an 8274. Its apple and oranges between the two, two totally different winches in size, manufacture and performance.
At least with Come-Up marketed through the ARB network you can rely on the back up support. They would sell anything that would risk damaging the ARB reputation.
Have seem the Come-up in use and it performs as well as any other winch of the same type and is cheaper to boot than the Warn.

I should have clarified, 8274 is out for me without modifications to the bar. I was comparing the 9.5ti which is a low mount, but fast winch.

Thats what I would be relying on as well, if I go down that track.

Always help, money saved can be spent (rather invested) somewhere else on the journey.
wopass wrote:they are still so bloody small !, only 30m of 8mm rope ! wtf.
i have 80m of 13mm cable on mine and that because i removed 20m to stop bunching... not an electric winch tho.....

Warn 9.5ti takes 125' (whatever meters that is). I know 30 meters is 100'.
Can't go PTO, will have to change the transmission and/or transfer case.

Would you care to add more description to the experience?

Which ones? Warn 9.5ti is on a special in the US (abt USD 850, plus freight and GST). Fully equipped were keen to discuss, but starting point was not even close. I don't know how keen they would be though.
As for the Come-up one, haven't priced it yet. But should be a fair bit more reasonable than Warn. Have a look at the specs on their new DS-9.5.

bugger, i thought the Jeeps had a PTO option ? to bolt off the gear box ? thought i read that somewhere

and 125' is basicly 40m (i think).....

you won't ever get youself a fast electric winch... they all come to a crawl under load, all you want is something reliable that'll get your truck out of the shit when its stuck up to the door handles in mud
Warn has a big following and are considered reliable enough. I know the shortcomings of an electric winch, but the stage I am at in my TJ's evolution, thats fine.
I was interested in people's experience with Come-up. I am sure somebody will come here with personal experience.

NV4500 transmission used to have a PTO option and some of the older NV242 transfer also came with an option for a PTO. Unfortunately, TJs are not equipped with either of these from the factory. Its tempting to change the transfer case, but then its big $$$.

sorry,back on topic now

have you considered making your own winch bar ? then the option of any brand winch opens up to you ? just throwing ideas around here

winch
can i add to the photo , the cable was imppossible to freewheel outof the winch when first brought ,the cable broke on its second winching , full rebuild and new cable supplied, astill cost john $100 for the work done on it, now pulls the prado very well seen it work 3or 4 times now

Thanks for that info. I plan on using synthetic rope, so I guess the free spooling can be tested at that time.
I am running a TJ (Wrangler), which weighs less than a Prado, so you think it would do okay for an occassional winch?
Re: winch
coxsy wrote:yes, i think it would be fine, for a tj jeeps are light
Great, thanks. BTW, Wranglers (TJs) weigh more than Cherokees (XJs) because of having a separate frame. TJs are not unibody construction, so they still weigh deceptively more than what people think. Put on a few mods and heavy bars (front and rear) and the thing changes.

after using the synthetic rope you'll never want to go back to steel cable, nice and light, easy to handle, dosent give you splinters in your fingers, dosent unspool into a big birds nest
but the down side is under load the rope cuts down through the layers on the drun and can make a tight mess to try and unspool again
