New Toy an 88 short wheelbase...

I"ve just got my hands on a new toy (too good a price to turn down.. and the miss's likes it "easy to park" )
Its an 88 2.4 turbo diesel SWB...Pajero
As I know nothing about working on these things, anybody got any ideas on what I can do to improve the little toys offroad ability and any weak links they have?
Bear in mind I'm not going to do anything with the motor, its in remarkable shape for the kms and its going to need to stay economical as this is going to become the new daily driver.
I was thinking at this stage possably removing the front axle and doing a hilux SAS like steve's MU, is there anything you can do with the front end of these things short of this??

Ps any body want a mazda astina or an alfa 740 got to clear some cars before the miss's starts complaining

Winde up the T bars and cut the bump stops in half.

Extended shackles for the rear.

Weak points from what i heard:

Cylinder heads on the Turbo modle

Gear box's are piss weak

Rust Rust Rust on the old square ones like yours

Check out the http://www.4x4wire.com mitsubishi forum, lots of info on the gen one pajero's there (named montero's in the states), the yanks really seem to like them.

Cool, another gen one owner. Havent had any dramas with mine (89 exceed with the "offroad option"). they definately need more clearance as diesil boy mentioned. If you have the coil spring rear end you can chuck in the springs from a gen 2 (91 onwards) for a 2 inch lift. plan to do this myself in a week or two myself.

I haven't had an issue with the lack of clearance yet , I've swopped over a set of Hilux 8" rims with ATX's (from another project) she's a bit illegal now gained another 6" of width unfortunatly 4" of that is outside the gards
I've been doing a bit of prunning and thinning QC means I've had the chance to try it out on a few forest tracks and it is doing remarkably well, It has a lot better traction than my other two (hilux and rover) it crawls up mud and wet grass slopes like the other two do in the dry! Must be better balance of weight or something
On the other side I've noticed it sledges more in corners and since I swopped to wider wheels it has lost a lot of power might end up doing an engine swop
As for the back end its leaf, but I've already made a set of extended shackles and when I get a bit more spare time I'll put them in and wind up the front, gota fix the winch first part of the reason it came cheap
