cruiser engines???
cruiser engines???
hi..
am considering gettin a swb or mwb cruiser, and just wondering which diesel engine is the one to go for?
looks to me like the different options are:
2.4Turbo
2.5 5cyl?
3.4 turbo
3.0 turbo (same as later surfs)
4.2
also see a 4.1l b15 engined cruiser for sale at the moment.
any advice would be appreciated. how many ks would u expect out of each of these engines before they start having serious problems?
cheers.

Re: cruiser engines???
2.4Turbo - crack heads (but there are lots of them about doing real well, larger exhaust helps)
2.5 5cyl? - don't know, need the experts onto this one
3.4 turbo - nice, just bought a truck with one of these
3.0 turbo - excellent engine, more of a performance diesel, keep maintainance up, can crack heads, some people recommend bigger radiator
4.2 - good chugger
there is also the 3.4 non turbo - bit of a slug, but apparently bomb proof
I'm no expert, all above opinions based on either personal experience, reports, presumption or hearsay

They are rare, but you can also get a 4.0 ltr 6cyl diesel swb 70 series.
Don't know about the others but I have a 2H, (4.0l )in a 60 series that ahs done over 1/2 a million kms and its is showing signd of it now, but still starts first flick of the key, and only runs every other month or so. Also have a 3.0 ltr turbo intercooled 90 series (prado) with 155 000kms on it. Brilliant engine with no trouble at all. Any diesel (or any fuel type) engine will last for ages if you keep up regular maintainance, and don't thrash the daylights out of them.

Good comments above, another thing to consider is what suspension you want.
The SWB & LWB 2.4 turbo (don't go there) & 3.0 turbo's have coil springs so drive a bit nicer on the road, & go well off road, but the diffs are smaller.
The SWB & MWB 3.4, 4.0 & 4.2's have leaf springs & bigger diffs, I had one that was a wallowing pig on the road, the later ones with big anti roll bars drive OK but don't flex much.
Cheers

someone mention GIRLS
Don't forget beer!
Ib have a 3F but with LPG (thew), but would suggest a chev, mines on my Christmas list (not sure which year though). But I'm a card carrying member of Sadams fan club coz he has a cool chev cruiser and drinks more beer than any one man should

As for suspension, I have the old leaves and shes a pig on the motorway I can tell you, if it's going to be a family ride, go for coils. The Mrs won't like the bumpy ride, or maybe she will

Beer is proof that God loves us and wants us to be happy.

3.4 turbo or the 4.2. I have both and they are both different. The 4.2 is probably better geared for off road though. Even though they have the same diff ratios 4.1 to 1 the 4.2 goes everywhere in 3rd low where as the 3.4 turbo is 2nd and 1st low but drops it's guts quicker. The difference has to be in the gearbox. That is running on 33" tyres. The 3.4 turbo is a rocket on the road (if a deisel could be a rocket) and the 4.2 is a chugger. Does a 100 no worries but is slow getting there
