I was told if it's the first regas since being imported it costs more due to parts being needed, not sure what or why though?

if its the first regas after being imported the gas has to be changed to eco freindly gas, thats why it cost more..... I havnt heard of do it yourself regassing....so you are looking between $100-200.... 8)

Most older vehicles use R12 refrigerant in the A/C, it is all being converted to R134a refrigerant which is a more ozone friendly gas.

The oil between the 2 gasses is different so has to be cleaned out, also the new gas runs at a higher pressure.

When changing refrigerants, and you have to as it's illegal to sell R12 now, you have to do a Retro fit on your system that consists of removal of AC pump, clean out and fit new "O" rings( because of different oil), new receiver drier(filter), vacuum down of system, add new oil and 134A refrigerant. You need the correct machinery and knowledge to be able to perform these tasks. It has been done successfully by changing receiver drier, vacuum and regas, but you take the risks of leaking "O" rings and paying for the whole job again.

NO SHORT CUTS,

FITZY.
