BF Goodrich Mud Terrain T/A 33s

Post by 3rnzir »

Anyone got/used this brand/pattern?If so,how did you find them as an all rounder.Read reviews from overseas, but NZ reviews seem short on the net.Was thinking of the 33x10.5x15LT.Though any of the wider ones for a Patrol would be helpfull.

I run 265/75R16 on my TJ. Tyres have done about 35k kms and are strill only half worn. They are reasonable in sloshy stuff, but real gooey mud needs a bit of tyre spinning to clear. They are not too noisy on the motorway. I run them as permanent tyres.

The only bad part I would say is that they are a bit dicey on slightly wet roads (ie roads just after a bit of drizzle). Once the roads are completely wet, they are fine. I have had no problems with them in terms of balancing or anything.

I might not replace them with the same make, simply because I want to try something different next time. Occassionally with the lighter TJ they lock-up and skid on slightly wet roads. But hippos are much heavier than TJs, so YMMV. Keep in mind that wider tyres may not necessarily be as helpful in certain conditions in the mud.

I run the tyres you mention - the 33x10.5x15

As far as I'm concerned they are a very good tyre - the road holding is good, noise is good and off road they preform well.

Downfalls is that they do tend to get slow leaks, I haven't had any for a little while now but its not uncommon to find one at 20psi after a few days.

You will get a few differing replies here and no one is wrong but conditions are so different throughout the country. From use & observation the BFG and tyres that 'look' similar preform better in southland conditions that some of the more modern types such as the Directional Kumho and MT/R.

from my experiences with the BFG a.t they are absolute shite. they get to about half to two thirds worn and then the cases start to seperate eg:bulged tyres. they have very soft side walls and get punctures very easy and they are expensive to buy

i would even go so far as to say the SAVERO a.t is a better tyre

working in a tyre shop has given me the knowledge that BFGs will outlast any tyre on the market.
they last for years and years and years and ......................................... I could go on, but you probably got the picture by now.
you only know when it is time to replace them because they start to separate due to being old as,coz you've had them for years.

I have never seen any off road so unfortunately I can't tell you how they perform in the muddy stuff etc.

BFG's are really good in my opinion. I got a set of 32x11.50x15's and banged them on my LR just after we put the injection on it. It had SO much more traction than the set of SAT's that it really wasnt funny. I loved em. Dad had them on the patrol aswell. Lasted 5 years or so, and only got replaced because they were no good offroad, and they became bad onroad because the tyre had started to wear out of round. Dad said he would buy another set, but bought the creepies because he couldnt get them in a 16" rim.

That`s great guyz.Wopass, one of the reviews I read from the USA had similar complaints to what you stated. This dude prefered the BFG M/T over the A/T in the wet.I think he was driving one of the big pickups. So could compare to the whales we drive here.I suppose any tyre off road would be OK with chains eh.Thanx again e`one

I ran BFG's and they were ok, but kept getting crap in the beads even at 35psi.
Found them scary on wet tarseal. I would run them if the price was better

I have the 35" BFG M/T's which I brought second hand at 11-12mm of tread,I found they drive great on road, wear well and as good as any M/T (better than most)in off road conditions.
I still think the MTR is the best tyre value wise for a M/T,if MTR's and BFG's were the same price I'd buy BFG every time but they'r not.
BFG is also bigger than most M/T's.

I havent used the KL71 but it looks to be the shit, the only thing I dont like about apart from there price is they almost a inch smaller than there rated size(33"= 32.2" when new)

Shane

I have desided to keep my BFG's and buy some extreme mud type tyres for the ugly stuff only.

I run BFG 33x10.5 MTs in my LWB Prado. Very pleased. Originaly had 12.5s that rubbed when turning (different wheels though). KATS said some people were returning the 10.5s for 12.5s as they were getting stuck with the 10.5s and not 12.5s. When mine wear out, I'll get the wider ones, just to increase footprint - does make a diference.
Am amazed at what they get through (haven't tried extreme MTs nor other brands though). Run pretty quiet on road.

maybe i just had a bad run with them

I heard there was a bad batch or two that did that a while back.

BFG have changed over the years, originally they lasted forever, then there was problems with seperation etc. The tyre compound was changed a few years back about when they became part of Michellin and (if rumour can be believed) the compound has changed again in the last 18 months or so. The jury is out on how long the current tyre will last, although the well respected tread pattern (that almost everyone else has copied) is still there. There is quite a big following of the Goodyear MTR at present and many sizes are sold out at present.

I've had 4 sets of BFG Mud terrains and one set of All terrains over the years and prefer the Mud terrains as a permanent tyre unless you are doing all sand work. I run them on rims towards the narrower side of the recommended rim width range as that keeps them on quite tightly. I used to run tubes in them but don't bother now. For really nasty mud runs I have a set of Simex Centipedes in the shed but don't use them much as the BFGs cope with most things.
I've wrecked a few, mainly cutting sidewalls on sharp rocks when I've had them aired down a lot.
Overall I'm very impressed with them, and keep buying them as they are pretty good allround tyre with god road manners and last well.
