I paid the same price for mine 2 years ago but I got the turbo model.
I haven't driven a non turbo model so I can't really say how well it would go.
I would personally be trying to find a turbo model, which you should be able to pick up for the same sort of money.

I have the same model with similar k's. My truck goes well. I am really happy with it. I havnt had any major problems except for rust but that is easy to fix. Apparently it is a reliable engine as well.
I find it can be a bit top heavy at times though. Hope that helps. I got mine for a price slightly lower.

I got mine about 3 weeks ago, 1985 Mid wheel base FRP, turbo, bit higher Ks, tad of rust, PTO Winch, Rear Locker, Spotties, 31" RMTs, Snorkle, Custom Bars, OME shocks, been a club truck. under 5K.
Saw one sell in the North for $2010, MWB Turbo but needed a screen, tyres and little other work for WOF.
I've driven non turbo briefly, and found it real truckie and sluggish, but felt strong. I had turbo as a priority when looking.
That shape cruiser range from 3k to 9k. Don't rush but grab it when you spot the right one.

depending on your budget, this would be a good start and then upgrade to more powerful motor later. this has the extra gear already in place for you.

its probably a bit far too go, but a guy in Taupo does a "drive in, drive out" fully certed lexus conversion for about 10k.

most of the 1uz you buy are auto.
so if you sit back and work out how you are gonna make a flywheel and adaptors etc, and rewire the whole thing to suit the link and the mounts and all of the other shit that you forget until you are doing the job and finally the cost of certification.
I reckon his price is not too bad, especially if you are not that mechanically minded.
cheers

hes a legend, he'll give anything a go !!
theres a guy in Taupo who was trying to sell his lexus surf on Trade me a while back. he had no joy, so he put an 8" diff head into the independent front. He might still be interested in selling if you have around 10-12k.
