1KZ-TE intercooler and related stuff wanted

Post by IcedJohnno »

I am after the bits to make my early Prado intercooled.

As you know my head has cracked- yes long ago I know :D - so now is the time to do the reliability mods. Got to keep the motor cool cos my jandel likes to be near the floor.

I would like to find out what parts I need to get, to fit the intercooler off the '96 and later Prados or intercooled Hilux's etc.

The other option would be the water to air intercoolers and how do they perform in comparison. Obviously the air to air will only work effectively at moderate or above speeds. What are the downfalls of the water to air variety?

Does anyone know if the fuel injector pumps, injectors or ECU's or anything else differ between the non-intercooled and the intercooled versions of this motor?

Thanks in advance
Cheers John

Hi Johno,

Here is the other thread for the wrx conversion that was discussed.

http://www.offroadexpress.co.nz/modules ... ntercooler

I priced a later model one up from the prado and it was 900 bucks. Bit to much for me so I'll adapt one.

articles on installing intercoolers and comparisons etc. you may have been there already I think

Have fun, cause I still am :afro:

do you really want to cut a big hole in your bonnet and put a scoop from another car manufacturer in it - purelly to keep this 1KZ-TE alive a bit longer ?

alot more work to put a Top mount intercooler in a toyota hilux/landcruiser , you have the body lift , the mounting , the ducting , cutting hole & fitting scoop & then you probably get less when you sell your 4x4 ( unless you take it out )- don't want to sound like a pessamist , but there are guys on trademe selling these scoops & intercoolers who have bought them to do the same thing , then realise what it takes to do it & end up selling them back on trademe , has come across a few already.

I reckn ( my 2 cents worth -lol ) find a High flow coolant thermostat that opens at about 84c ( stock is 88c ) and your fine , might have modify one to fit from another vehicle - go down to a perfomance shop with the one from your car and compare them & pick the most suitable or speak to a specialist coolant & radiator shop .

if you want an intercooler , i have 1 i bought off trademe a little while ago , its small and compact to convert in a water/Air (200 x 180 x 100mm thick ) but realised it won't flow what my soon twin turbo's will pump out ( will go Big 'Bar & plate' out front for my build ), it looks brand new has the brackets & some pipes mounted off it , just mount it to an area where there is airflow and your right - $30 & its yours ( have a photo of it somewhere when i bought it )!

Am planning on keeping this truck until its only good for trackfill :) Have to say I really like the responsiveness of the 1KZ-TE which will only get better later on when the cunning plan takes effect. Plan is to LPG fumigate it once other stuff has happened.

As I understand it there is no need to body lift for the intercooler on a Prado but if anyone else knows this then please respond!

Thermo on a 1KZ-TE opens at 71°C, I've never had my truck's water hot according to the Toy "indicator" they refer to as a gauge. However the cylinder head exhaust temperatures probably get hot far too regularly due to my penchant for fast open road cruising. Only way around this is to cool the charge. Two options, the intercooler and the LPG. The latter should give me greater economy as well.

Thanks for the offer of the small I/c. Is it a water/air from the manufacturer or not?

Am really planning on getting the whole factory I/C setup as thats a proven route, unless a good water/air I/c that has the right airflow rate and heat capacity come along.

cheers John

I have fitted a Subaru water/air to my 1HD-FT with a snorkle and look out... Average air intake temp now about 53dC will confirm soon, need time to install probe but truck is in panel shop some one pulled out in front of me.. nasty about $10k in damage. Had to remove head and de-carbon, emmision control system and tappet cover breather have a lot to answer for. Playing with LPG fumagation recon we have about 150kw at fly wheel now, just need 3" exhaust then the fuel pump and boost levels get tickled

Thanks for that Namic.

Does anyone else know about these?

Perhaps I need to talk to the Subbie boys.
