Waipara River Mouth

Post by coastcare »

Just in the last few months some 4WDs have been causing damage in the Waipara River Mouth area. This is a request to visitors to please respect the river environs. Please avoid creating more & deeper ruts. By all means come and enjoy yourselves but please stop the hooning & destruction.

Just in case, like me you want to know who coastcare are:

http://www.ccc.govt.nz/parks/NaturalAreas/coastcare.asp

Coast Care is a programme run by the Christchurch City Council to look after the coastal area from the Waimakariri River to Godley Head.

Council staff work with community Coast Care groups to help protect the coast. These groups are made up of people interested in beach parks on Christchurch’s Coast: residents, schools, beach visitors, conservationists. There are 11 beach parks in the Christchurch area.

wjw, I think this is a different Coast Care, Canterbury Regional council used to run a group years ago out of Leithfield or Amberley beach area I think, and that character Fred Murray was involved, I am going back a few years, but I think the post here could be from that group, and yes it would be good if they told us all who they were and what they would like to be done.

As I can recall at that time a lot of articles in the Northern Outlook paper penned by Fred all bashing 4WD vehicles and making us look like real bad bastards, and there were some hostile meetings of the public at the time, at one meeting I was at a joker got up and said Fred was a reformed crook, spent time in the big house, so really not sure what goes there.
my 2 cents worth.

My name is Greg Bennett, I am involved with the Amberley Beach Coast Care & Pegasus Bay Coast Care. Fred Murray is not involved with us. We are not about advocating banning vehicles from beaches & rivers as we are not a political lobby group. What we do advocate is taking care when visting the beach & being respectfull to the coastal environment. For example please do not drive over sand dunes, wetlands etc. Please contact me if anyone wishes to know more & I would be quite happy to meet anyone at the Waipara to discuss.

This Saturday we are planting over 600 plants at Amberley Beach. Everyone is welcome to help out. 10.30am - 12.30pm. Follow the signs from the SH. We are putting on a sausage sizzle & drink for the volunteers.

Cheers

A successful planting day. We had about 30 people turn up & we got about 700 plants in the ground in 3 hours. It was a bloody good effort.

Dave M
Coastcare has a representative on there who represents 4WD people via Combined It is one of many groups locally that we are involved in.
Greg and his people are good people and I was pleased to see some ORE people out there getting involved.
The notice about Greg’s planting day came a little bit late to us to get numbers out there and frankly we have just a couple of weeks ago had two 4WD Clubs on the beach doing a beach clean up.
I will communicate with Coastcare so that we do get better notice of these activities and I can then post it on the forum so that those willing to help can get involved.
(maybe Greg if you read this drop me an e-mail or give me a call)

Thanks Paul.
I'm always keen to help out where I can, so hopefully for the next one, we can have a trip organised afterwards so I can make a full weekend of the drive down

Trees For Canterbury sponsored plantings are held through the winter. The next planting is at Port Robinson in two weeks I think. Their website has the details.
