Give ya insurence company a call, just tell them it broke while driving on a farm race.
My brother got a new ECU out of his insurence company after it died for some reason.

Actually, the breather you are looking at on TJ is actually the transfer case breather. This should go all the way to the top of your firewall. If its not connected with something, thats where your problem started.
As for the tranny, the breather is actually inside the bell housing for some reason. Getting sand in there is really odd. Could be possible that he drowned it in sandy water and now that the water has finally evaporated due to heat, you are left with sand in it.

Seems the dope smoking bloke i bought it off might have dropped it in the salty stuff somewhere when wind surfing, quick oil change and off it goes!!
Well, at least you are off the hook for driving it in to the ground (or should I say mud).
I think its time to upgrade the tranny to something that could take the abuse better. Have a look at something like http://www.sumitracing.com for options. Might be a marginally more expensive, but you will have a new tranny which would last another 10 years.
