Engine Transplant For Mahindra ?

Post by MAHINDRACJ4A »

Hey its time to suss out a engine conversion for the mahindra cj4a jeep

only problem is i wish to retain the 3spd 4x4 gearbox

now if i go with a lexus v8 how can i get that to mate with the mahindra gearbox

or has any one got any other ideas that would be easy to mate with the mahindra gearbox ?

heres a photo of the jeep when we got it:

and heres a photo of the jeep now:

its going in for a full paint job, engine conversion, and also maybe disc set up

Toyota 22R ?? - has been done a few times
Ford V6 (capri) - Also been done a few times (Dad did one)

Seen a Rover V8 in one, made the right sound.

Why do you want to keep the 3 speed? If you put a V8 you will need spare axles.

Was a cool vehicle but would tip over if you wearn't careful. Ideally you'd put hilux axles under it to get some decent brakes and a bit of width & strength.

gotta agree with him there. if you put anything bigger than a 4 cylinder in there, it will blow the running gear to pieces.
hilux gear and commy V6 should go awesome.

I had a 79 Mahindra CJ4A with Rover V8/gearbox/tranny, running to the standard Dana Diffs. Disc brake conversion up front, Power steering. Wicked machine. Only thing was the steering circle was two months wide

oh because of the hassel to put new gearbox in, i will have to change a lot of stuff i think if i start changing the gearbox, and plus its a good little box great for offroading.

but if theres any engine, gearbox combo that would work well with out pouring lots of money into please let me know

i am wanting to put in a engine with over 200hp standerd then i will mod it hopfully to get about 300hp, yeahh

-

im changing my diff for a higher top end speed, at the moment it only does 95km so with the new mahindra/willys diff should get up to about 125km - 135km/h

im also planning on doing disc conversion but if i can i hope to do front and rear, could you give me an idea of what i need and how to go about it roughly

-

and what do you guys think about the roll/bar is it strong enough for thomsons track ? or should i add more to it ?

Talk to Oldblue on here. Pretty sure he did the disc conversion many moons ago. It was all done way before i got hold of the Jeep

Um quick question, why do you want to go faster at top end?? I thought you would be looking for torque and low gear ratios rather than top end speed. [/quote]

because its also going to be driven on the road so its not just going to be a trailer queen, thats why im after a bit of top end speed, but the ratios will still be way better than any average standerd 4x4

Are you in Matamata area..? and buy your jeep off Trade me about 9 months ago.?
I have/ collecting bits for the same conversion, but its to be used mainly off road. I desided that the Marhindra chassis had just to much twist for any thing than a low powered 4 cylinder. so that got biffed and a Toyota surf beam axle front half was mated to a coil rear chassis also shortened up to almost match the orginal jeep wheel base lenght. ( thanks Tony ) The motor is a 2jz Toy and running a A series 4wd auto gearbox. As this is all being fitted into a Surf chassis with surf diffs everyone has knowledge and the is no surprises,
Dont try and use the jeep Marhindra gearbox as it WILL break just before the diffs shit themselves and thats with a 4 cylinder standard motor which could have been a Mits. 4g35
have fun 8) great looking Indian

as for engine, found someone with a v8 that will drop right in and mate up to the gearbox too and sits on original mounts (American old V 8) very rare motors as some Willy's jeep came standard with them from factory

Hi
I dont think any Willys came with a factory V8 ( someone will correct me if Im wrong ) but Ford made jeeps as well and they came with a side valve V8 and if you have one of these motors(thats a complete runner) its far to valuble to be putting into a Marhindra. :(
cheers

http://www.jeeptech.com/engine/

The "Vigilante" AMC 327 V8 has a cast iron block and cylinder head with overhead valves and hydraulic lifters. The Vigilante was built by AMC and is not the popular Chevy 327 V8. The AMC 327 was used in Jeep full size trucks and Wagoneers from 1965 until 1968. AMC did not standardize engine bell housing bolt patterns until the early 70s, so as I understand it, the AMC 327 V8 does not have the same bell housing bolt pattern used in later AMC engines.

All I could find on google... So the first V8 was in CJ-6 (55-75)

you run the twin turbo set up and I'll bet money on you breaking your running gear very quickly.

No they are not that weak but they were never designed for more than the 70hp 2.2 F head factory engine! Having said that like I mentioned before Dad doubled the hp and only broke the odd rear axle.

:? Is It currently registered? (on hold?) Is it certified for the Toyota motor that is in it at the Mo? If you are planning big changes and are going to use the old Mindy on the road you'll need to get it certified....

Which might require $$$ to bring it up to standard...

Would be a lot cheaper to work with the toyota setup if it is certified with that.

Cheers, Wheels
