Amsteel blue winch rope

Hey guys and girls.

I'm looking at reducing the front end weight and being rid of my steel winch rope.

Are there any disadvantages to replacing the wire rope with the synthetic fibre versions. Ive heard all the upsides, but no downsides.

Also, it seems there a few different diameters of these synthetic ropes.... is 8mm sufficient for a 1500 kg wagon.....? How do the synthetic ropes compare to each other.

i've heard the synthetics fray on sharp rocks/obstructions and can get uv damage in sunlight, also when fine sand/grit works its way into the fibres it can cause wear and tear on the internal fibres....

still, no recoil and other ups is a bonus...

i'll go for the blue stuff when i get a winch...

its tough stuff.....

HI, you didn't say what sort of winch it was.

I have seen amsteel blue in a 9500HS warn low mount which has the brake inside the drum. It has got a little hot and loooks a little off but I cound't say if this has affected its use at all.

I love the stuff on the comp truck - brilliant to work with.

Yes it is more prone to chaffing onthe likes of a rock but this is only really a factor when you a winching others, as when you are winching yourself the rope is stationary on the said rock.

I have a low mount with internal brake but will still be replacing the rope with synthetic.

the only down side I've found is the synthetic rope having less friction than steel pulls itself down through the lower layers on the winch drum under load and can be a pain in the arse to get it un spooled again

The drum should only get hot on a low-mount when being powered out as it is working against the brake. When winching in, it shouldn't be generating any additional heat. Therefore, if you take the rope out under freespool, then you should be fine.

Talk to Tony Delany at Ultra Ropes at the Mount. 027 497 3745. He is the NZ importer / distributer for Amsteel and he knows his stuff.

We use 11mm dia on the race truck (2.6T GQ ute). Wouldn't use any other product.

Cheers for that, I spoke to Tony today and he recommended 10mm (8,100 kg load, they should only be used at around 30% of their load rating for longevity).

He also mentioned that the fairlead ought to be replaced regardless of condition. Even if it looks smooth, (after running a steel wire rope) it will still run the chance of ripping the synthetic to shreds in no time.

UV damage will be no problem.

At $9.13 p/m (includes GST) its fairly reasonable and he will splice eyes, hooks etc free of charge! Fairly good deal (I assume)

Yup, replace your fairlead with a hawse type from 4WDBits etc. Not worth the risk of nicking the new rope on a damaged roller fairlead.
