Manukau club oops in thompsons

I remember the first time I went through that hole.... Hmmmm shall I go through, or round??? Hmm... Definately through, cos if I fall in....

Just finished watchin the 681 pic's in that album as a slide show. They got a fair way down, but couldn't quite pick where they turned round. Before the main bogs anyway.

They did the loop on the way up too, big day for em

We got to the big wide hole ....
I'm guessing we got 2/3rds of the way through.

Image

It was getting dark by the time we had hand winched the 3rd truck through the hole and so the decision was made to turn around

I was in the mangatuks about 2 months ago and my mate pointed out the start to the famous 24 hours track. I thought I'd have to go home and get my matchbox toy to fit through there. looks interesting. :D :D :D

Yip its a tight start but we squeeze our whales through. Im thinking about heading in there in a month or so and having a crack in the new truck.

A couple of summers ago we got 3 truck through in 2 1/2 hours. Takes a bit longer in winter though :D

Have you done it ??

How far have you gone ??

Which end did you start from ??

so the upshot of it is that if you want to go over thompsons and are not sure if your ready to do it, walk it first, takes about 1.5 - 2 hours return from the summit. then you decide

If you want to do an ORE run up Thompsons as a run down do the loop track on the Te Aroha side.

To do the Katikati side you idealy want a maximum if four well set up vehicles. Anymore and it will become a marathon.

What an awesome day. The main track is very mushy but easy enough for a shiney to make it. We started the loop from the top but the gate after the first mud hole has been locked. Does anyone know anything about this?
We turned around and after conquering the summit we did the loop back wards from the bottom. The loop is very slippery. Had a couple of winches, so I was happy.
Now have to spend tomorrow cleaning all the gear.

Gate? In 14 years of using that track either on truck, bike or foot I personally have never seen a gate across the track restricting access...

This is the first time I have seen a gate too. It could be lifted off the hinges if you wanted to. We decided not to.
