Help! Your opinions please...

I have a Terrano which needs new 31" tyres. Most of my driving is on the road, but when i go offroad, I generally go through bogs and greasy clay stuff so I want a pattern that is reasonably open.

I did loads of reading, and was all set to get a set of Goodyear MT/R's as there is so many people here who reckon they are the business. But then everywhere I look tells me they are out of stock for the best part of a month, or maybe a little more.

I've been told I can get Sumitomo Serengeti's or GT Adventuro's for the same sort of money but I wonder if they will wear as well given the road driving I do. And besides, they don't look as cool as the MT/R's.

So what do I do: Wait for the MT/R's, get the GT's or Sumi's, or is there something else you would recommend?

i found the buckshot mudders are good on and offroad on my nissan... :wink:

I run 30x9.5 MT/R's on my 91 terrano. They are the softest walled mud tyre ive run. I had Durango (american) last time and they handled much better on road. The MT/Rs are good grip wise other than just wet tarmac. Just be prepared for a bit of wallow around corners. Im runnning about 38psi (i know its high) and its not to bad.

I had a hassle gettin them but Penrose Goodyear service centre has good contacts in the distibution centre and found the missing pair in the south island and only charged me the freight from Auckland to Northland. He may be able to find a set.

I run 33" buckshot mudders on my 70 series cruiser at 25psi.
They handle real well on the road even when you chuck it into corners, and they are great off road too, specially in the mud.

you are gonna get lots of opinions and ultimately you will have to make a decision on what to buy. If you look back through old posts you will probably find lots of talk about what tyres to buy.

Ive just brought a couple of gt adventuro mud tyres to replace my front tyres and on the back ive got the gt savero muds. The adventuros have a far more aggresive tread pattern than the savero(which i believe is similar to the sumitomu). They are also noticibly noisier too, and being more aggresive they might wear faster.
At the end of the day your always going to be sacrificing off road grip for a faster wear rate or vice versa.

hi heres my 5 cents worth I have a set of serrangits as off road tyres my brother had a set on his landcrusier and could not wear them out and have been told of a guy living in akaroa that drives to chch every day and he get 12 to 18 months out of them
a little noisy on the road but thats compared to my car tyres on normally run day to day good luck making your mind up it took me 6 months

Just fitted RT03's on my truck and Love em nice & quite on the road great sidewall protection and great cleaning I would give them a 10/10 but only had them for a few week's

dont even think about touching those adventuro MTs - we bought 4 complete sets for 4 on site landcruisers - the ones on the two which stayed on site are still going strong (its a mine site on the west coast) but the ones which went on the vehicles which commute to town were worn out completely after 3 months - only a few thousand KMs of on road driving and they're stuffed.

i had a set of buckshots and they were good on road and were good wearing but were pritty crap off road. they have no side wall tread. i have mtrs now and on a light truck like my surf i think they are great. way better than the buckshots.

the sumitomo serengetti are cheaper than the mtrs (about the same price as the buckshot) and are ment to be better than the buckshot in the mud.

seringetis should be cheaper than the mtrs by quite a bit. i havnt had mtrs on my truck but i have had seringetis, and i wasnt impressed with how quick they wore. they went well enough offroad but i wouldnt expect them to be as good as mtrs. if the place is out of stock, there will prob be a reason. :wink:

bfg mud terrains have a good reputation aswell, but are quite pricy.
