Diff issues

Post by fweddy »

Ever since I had my cruiser its been noisy in the back. The guy who I bought it from said it was like it since the locker was put in (Powertrack Lockrite).

A while ago I checked the oil level and it was fine but noticed it had a bit of water in it.

Just recently it has started leaking at the front. After some swiming today I notice its now leaking mayonaise so the water level has increased.

I think I'm going to have to rip the whole thing out and check the locker and bearings and teeth etc and obviously replace the oil. As you can see this won't be a quick 1 hour exercise so will have to wait till I have the time to spare. Will be needing to use it this week a bit.

I should drop the oil out and replace it now since it had water in it but was thinking to do it all at once.

What my question is is, How urgent do you think I should get on to it? Should I use it much like it is or will it be ok for a wee while (couple of weeks with little use)

Also if someone has another one of these (BJ74) diffs it might be handy if things in there need replacing.

I would dump the water / oil and replace asap, then you may be ok for a little bit otherwise there is water where there should be oil and so no lubrication where it's needed

My 10c for what it's worth.
There is no mechanical problem so difficult that it cannot be solved by brute strength and ignorance.

If theres water in it you want to look at changeing the oil asap before the diff head starts rusting up  . The diff should be a 4.11:1 and there's plenty of them around cheap if need be

Like these guys said, change the oil now and check it out later. When you pull it out you may want to look at putting a long breather on it to prevent this happening again. 8)
