Thompsons track
thompsons track
was told once the pines there are going to be logged, maybe why
89 safari, pto winch, 33x15 simexs. sliders,75mm lift . turbo intercoolered
There are two gates ,, one just down from the main track at the bottom end of the loop , and another in the bush about half way around .. The rule Ive heard is ,, If the gate is shut ,, stay out ,, the land owner has stock in there .. However I have never seen the gates shut .. Also heard he dosnt want people useing any of the little side tracks in there ,, stay to the main loop .. Feel free to corect me if im wrong .. I think we are lucky to be allowed in there so I wouldnt want to piss the guy off .. My 2c worth ..

I agree with you. We are lucky to be in there and we don't want to piss him off. Thats why we didn't lift the gate off and turned around. We figured if the gate was open on the lower enterance we could continue onto the loop. We did not see any stock or evidence or stock though.
I thought I would just ask the question on here and see if anyone here knew exactly why the gate is locked. No one I was with has ever seen the gate locked either.

so the gate at the top was closed and locked ?( i know where that is), and you say you went to the bottom and did the loop backwards and went to the top ? where the gate was locked and turned around and had to go back i assume ?
i have never seen stock in there and allways assumed it was part of the forestry ? i know a lot of people go hunting in there (me included and i get a permit from doc) so maybe i need to find out who the private owner is so i can just check with him if its actually ok to be in there hunting

If you already know everything, DON'T ask bloody questions!!

you can get all the boundaries etc and zoom in real close thru this site, use the parcel layer (but it doesn't tell you who owns them). You'll see theres some interesting surveying on the track itself in the bush at the big corner. It also shows that the short track to the summit isn't part of the paper road. (good aerial photos too)
Then go on the doc gis site to find out their exact boundary Ben, that seems to give an acurate picture of which bits are governed by them.

how ungratefull can you get, a guy goes out of his way on a public holliday to drive for miles and recover a bunch of guysd that sing his praises and then stiff him when it comes to the recovery costs...... should have left them there......

Totally agree, this is one reason why I decided not to sign up for the rescue squad.
The squad is certainly a great tool to rely on if and when you get in the shit but theres no way I personally would be going out of my way to assist only to be shafted at the other end by some ungreatful bastard who was not equipt nor did they seek advice prior.
One of our fellow members also took the 45minute drive to the gate of Tomos then headed in only to find assistance wasnt required and in the event his truck suffered some expensive repairs to the driveline trying to retreat back out of there, all at the expence of his own pocket.
Now thats BULLSHIT!!!
Maybe we should have some cash tucked right next to our first aid kit or snatch strap as a basic requirement....Ha ha...
really? what a pack of pricks!
I talked to those guys cos I was about a k from where they got stuck. The driver was having a bit of a 'my eyes' moment.
They seemed totally crazy though cos allegedly they drove past a slip that I had stopped for 2 hours to dig away the bank, and then didnt even attempt due to fear of death.
I saw the truck the other day and was stoked they got rescued... could have been me in that position more than once!
Id say if i was a local i could set up a business specialising in recovering vehicles from there. charge a few grand, cos its a big operation.
Every time ive been there ive seen one or more people in mortal peril
one guy doomed with a charge light on, another guy with an engine fell out light on

got told of a fella in a prado who was nose to tail stuck between two trees at the first play area, this was back at the beginning of the year.
Came running out of the bush to flag down a surf that was passing by. Surf got into position to help this prat..... "got ur snatch strap?" was the question....... "what snatch strap?" was the answer. Clown was on his own, didnt have a winch either, or even a spade........... not one iota of recovery gear, and even less grey matter.
Surf driver got him out, but honestly, i probably would have left him there. guarantee if left there for the night... the next time he went anywhere hed have the necessary gear..... and not only for himself, but carrying the gear to help others if required too. (which is a bit of a catch 22 given this scenario)

And a shackle to go with it for another $100.00. Still beats paying someone to come up on a recovery mission. If they pay that is.....

BUMP
4 trucks went through on the weekend. Had some snatching and winching to do, but the custom truck, a safari on 35s with no traction aids, a Wrangler with 32's, and the Pirate had no majors, a surf however broke a CV.
Wet and boggy in the usual parts. Track is apparently a cruise down to "finger rock" with the washouts sorted out.
Heard two stories about the rest of the track getting "sorted", first said it would be revisited before Christmas, the second version is that its going to be "smoothed" from Kati side just before Easter......
We will see

Nice to have a shiney bush drive track
Re: Thompsons track
Apparently its been over the top again. a couple of trucks are heading up tomorrow to have a look to see how far over its gone now.
Just been speaking to a dude that was up there last weekend who reckoned the matamata side was far more difficult than the first 4 odd k on the kati side where it had been dozed, but that there was also a slip down there too, perhaps the dozer had gone over to fix the slip???????
