Post by pinky »

well pulled the axle apart today to find out what was going on in there as it was locking up turns out the crownwheel and pinon are broken .....so dose any one know if the croenwheel and pinon from a IFS diff will fit in a solid axle open diff head :?

they WON'T, ifs diff is 7.5 inch, solid axle is 8 inch, but if you're after a surf 8 inch diff I can help, have several ratio's, and most early surf's are 4.55 ratio, and if you're after a 8 inch 4.55 or 4.3 or even a 4.88 I can help

you have to match ratio's front and rear, so you need to knoe what ratio you have to be replaced, best way is to count the teeth on the pinion, then the teeth on the crown wheel.
Divide the figure of crown wheel to pinion and you've got the ratio!!
peice of piss.
pobably $150 for a good diff head is all you'll have to pay

also try to go lower ratio's if you can to drive the bigger tyres, i'm running 5.29 diffs on 35 inch tyres and the gearing is bang on, my father is running 4.88 diffs on 33 inch tyres and the gearing is bang on, best thing you can do to enhance the power from the engine is get the final gearing bang on :!:
makes a huge difference off road :!:

Pre-1980 toyota hiace vans and flatdecks, the ones with twin round headlights have a 8 inch 5.29 diff in them.
They're getting hard to find these days, but that's life :!:
