Shakey steering

Post by DaveM »

I'm starting to notice that when hitting uneven surfaces etc in the road that the steering wheel gives a shake, or sometimes just under braking.

I've had similar when I found that the front panhard rod nut was loose, and it caused excess movement in it.
Could it be I've ruined the new bushes, and this is causing the problem?
I've noticed that one of the radius arm bushes has seperated from the inner sleeve, but dont think this would cause it.

Any ideas before I go out and start replacing bushes etc I don't need to?

Cheers

DB, if I take the bearings apart, I take it the effort to turn the hubs is dictated by the shims? ie if all is ok and I put them back the way they came apart, I can't run into problems?

I would look at the panhard rod bushes first. If flogged out, the truck behaves as you've described when nut was loose.

Yep, If you do one at a time, you can't go wrong. Just pull em out, give em grease, put them back in, then check the turning effort. You need to have the wheel off and the steering links disconected from the hub you are checking.

Check your steering damper, dissconnect one end, and try and compress/extend it, if it moves a few mm with little resistance and then becomes harder to move, its worn out.

Check your new wheel bearing hasn't come loose too!!!!!!

Could also be pan hard rod bushes too. You replaced those recently though eh??

Dave,
I'll pull the auction and send it down with my girly this weekend. You've bought enough shit off me as it is.

Well, I replaced the panhard bushes, and the radius arm bushes, but no change.
Looked at the swivel hubs today, and found they spun freely with no effort at all, so took the 1 remaining shim out, but instead of the 1kg or so of effort required to turn it, it took over 6kg.

Whats better, to much or not enough?
Anyone know where I can get the bearings alone, without having to buy the full swivel hub kit with seals etc? Have tried Ripco and BNT, but no luck yet.
