Surfs Up....(Day #1 cleaning)

Post by D1HARD »

Well I recently sold my Rugger to a great guy and his wife down in Picton that needed a transit vehicle from there to their batch in the Sounds.
They are very happy.

With that cash and a bit more I decided to get a Hilux Surf or perhaps more appropriate a HILEX Surf.(with its LEXUS/SOARER V8 )

Thanks to a mate on here DJ I got a reasonable deal for the truck as a project which started yesterday at 7am.

She has some minor problems that are getting sorted as I type, the aftermarket fuel pump was not flowing what it should and the water pump whines and the rear brakes were shot.

Other than that the V8 roars, and is a real blast to drive.. :D
At this stage though the LINK PLUS ECU is running her pretty rich, possibly in a mistaken attempt to combat the lack of flow from the pump.
And due to that she consumes fuel similar to that of a highly strung race car...

The worst part was the fact it was filthy....the underneath of the truck and chassis etc is in exellent condition but was caked in mud, sorted that with a water blaster and a screwdriver.

The interior was also bad but some serious cleaning sorted that out as well,if its going to be dirty I want to dirty it...

I stripped the Hilux and removed all the carpets and seats and basically everything inside the truck.

Most of the interior was covered in mud and gorse and .22 shells and beer caps and chicks hair pins.

Found a NZ 5c, and a Japanese 50 yen piece when I started getting serious...

I have 90% completed the trucks interior, there are some small areas I will work on over a period of time.

I will get into the engine tommorow,I have some brand new NGK Iridium plugs ready in waiting.

She is a bit of a fix it,...but I think it will be a great project... :D

While I am here anybody get some good deals on some 33s for the truck the tyres are not the best.

Ha ha ha :D ,yep... I have got her down at a mates workshop in town getting some new rear brakes.

As soon as I get her back I will grab some pics of the engine which is a very neat fit in the Surf bay.

And the snorkel is actually functional, although I think it will be very restrictive for the V8.

Have to look at waterproofing a lot of fuses and such like in the engine bay,no point having a snorkel with those sitting on the side of the firewall.

Jack the rear end off the gound, spin a wheel, if the one on the opposite side spins in the same direction, it IS LSD, if the wheel on the opposite side spins in the opposite direction, it ISN"T LSD
good luck :!:

or put seats back in, back it out on the street, engauge first gear, graduly build revs to 5000rpm, side step off clutch, when smoke clears check tire marks on the road LSD should have two lines. You may have to do this several times. then after being released from police read newspaper for new accomidation.
thats what I would do
Cheers DJ
