jeep should be around the 1112kg mark, havnt weighed it yet but got told that that is what the roughly weigh standerd, with the 1g-gte engine with boost winded up to 15psi should be interesting with over 250+ hp haha

That puts you in the "Hope you have a HT license" catagory then. Maximum gross laden weight is 4500 kg before you have to have one I think. (only if the law weigh's you though, or if you are unluckey enough to have a prang).

I looked into this on the LTSA website and had thought there was no requirement to get HT Licence as neither the tow vechicle or the trailer were over 4500kgs or over 6000kgs combined?
Would be keen to hear others definition of the rule - I would rather be operating inside the law than find I was not covered by insurance!

It is an interesting topic and hard to keep up to play with as Land Transport keep changing the rules.
This is what I found on the Land Transport website
So strictly speaking, at a GVM of 4760kg, you are over the limit on an ordinary car licence.
In addition to that there are other applicable laws as well such as if the GVM of the trailer is over 2000kg (which in this case it is) the trailer must have brakes. If the trailer doesn't have "breakaway brakes" which apply themselves should the trailer and tow vehicle part company, then twin crossed safety chains are required. (I didn't know that either
)
Another law which applies is that the whole combination should be able to stop in a distance of 7 metres or less at a speed of 30km/h. (I didn't know that one either
)
As you say, I would take an a-hole of a cop to pull you up on this. And with a decent tow vehicle like a Cruiser which is factory rated to 3500kg (correct?) there should be no issues if driven sensibly. The only thing I would keep in mind is if you have an accident (doesn't have to be your fault) and your insurance company decides to weigh your vehicle combination, you can kiss your insurance good-bye.
Looks to me like the rules could do with an overhaul. There are so many heavy tow vehicles about nowadays which you can drive with an ordinary licence, Dodge Rams and Hummer H2's spring to mind, yet to fully utilise their safe capabilities you need a HT license.
Yet a Jap tourist who has driven a tiny Nissan Micra all his life in Japan can come to NZ and jump in a 6 tonne campervan legally. Doesn't make sense

Guess they still have the stop within 7m at 30km/hr but surely reason would say that the guy whith the bigger tow vehicle is safer to have on the road (more stopping power and less likely to get pushed around by trailer). Just my 2c.

But if that vehicle is being driven on a class 1, something goes awry and the driver kills someone, are the cops also going to wear the blame because someone was doing something outside the confines of the law and they did nothing about it? Too bloody right they are cause the PC brigade will leap up and down.

Hate to have to agree with this statement, but xj is right. We can plaed ignorance all we like, but I guess ultimatly the law is the law. And the cops have to uphold that.
What I would like to know though is: Can we sit our HT license using your towed rig?. If we need Ht to drive it, them should we not be ablt to sit license using it?

thats a goodie, someone should go and annoy an LTSA agent next week to see what response you get. I for one would be happy to sit my license in my VX with the 40 on the trailer behind.
There are so many flaws in the laws in this country, that its just not worth bitchin about really. It does make for good reading though.

yeah going by this from the ltsa website technically you should have a class 2 licence
to be honest if you know someone who has a truck that you can use to sit the licence it is worth doing for piece of mind
if you have access to a vehicle then doing the tests is less that $200
could be worth it if it keeps the evil insurance people off your back

Interestingly enough my someone I know tried to go for their HT in a truck that tared at 2500kg with weight on the back. He was told to go get a real truck. Despite needing to have an HT to drive a truck in that state legally.
He borrowed a truck which tared at just over 4T and used that for the license test.
Oh and my rig weighs 2300kg empty. Rangie with an Isuzu diesel and matching gearbox.
