safari charge problems

hi ive just purchased a gq 4.2 non turbo and im having battery charging problems. Seems that one battery was buggered which ive replaced but the battery light is coming on. Tested the charge between the two batterys just before while running and its only 23.9 volts. Thats too low right? whats the best path to follow buy a second hand one? new one? or get the current one reconditioned? buy chance does anyone in chch recommend anyone for this or have a spare alternater lying around that they want to sell

hey there if u take it out remove the end shield and clean out the brushes not a hard job just awkward also while appart check ya bearings and seal check the lenght of ya brushes they could b worn badly clean armature and put back together takes me 1.5 hrs from start 2 finnish ... done mine 7 times lol keep filling the brushes with mud
