100in Landcon

Post by Cheesy »

Well im new here but been watching for a while, just getting into a project, well its just getting serious.

It started out with a cheap 88in landrover with a gutless diesel which broke, being a poor student at the time and having an XC falcon in the drive way (undie 500 car) it became a landcon pretty quickly. It also got long wheel base slowing devices (still not really considered brakes)

Next step was skippy panels and 3.5 diffs, did feel a bit guilty about cutting the rest of the skippy up and sending it to the scrap heap though.

This is the result of that

Image

It is reasonably capable for a leaf sprung landy although it has problems like the front prop shaft rubbing on the front cross member and the back wheels rubbing on the top of the guards

The motor was getting a bit tired so I decided to rebuild another one for it, then the scope got a bit bigger and I decided on an EFI engine, at that time a mate had an old rangie that he wanted to get rid of so its going to be a 4 door 100 inch coil sprung landrover with a 4.1 EFI falcon motor and auto

This is what I got for a donnor, not too much to take to the dump

The stripping process

Engine mounts welded on and out riggers tacked on

Engine in and fire wall bolted on

Wing sitting in place with enough clearance to manifold

Wicked! I love those old landy's.
neighbour used to have one with a wasted old mitsy diesel. he used to start it up about once a month and fill the street with smog to a visibility of about 5 metres and use it to pull out tree stumps and things.
a std one with SATs is still better than pretty much any std new one.
spose you'l be thinking about cruiser running gear eventually?

Ive also got the steering column and box mounted up, the wheel is 60mm closer to the firewall than the landrover one but I figure if I put a smaller steering wheel and a quick release boss it will put it back in the right place

Image

At the moment its got a manual steering box and all the bits fit together so hopefully the equivalent power steering bits will also fit about right
Image

I have also started on the back door (was bored one weekend and didnt have any other bits), this is a modified standard door and where it will fit in the tub

thats why I waited till I had a bit done on it before I put any pictures up!

will leave rover running gear in it at the moment, the auto should be a bit nicer on the axles, Ive broken more half shafts in it with the landy diesel than the falcon 6, much smoother engine

SO
Turoa or Cheesy, whos landy will be running first? Not that I'm a betting man...

I have a mate setting up the injected Coon motor and auto in a J20 Pickup at the moment, sounds like a good power plant

Good work. I love series LR's. Is it a 2a?

Have you seen my buildup thread? it hasnt been updated for a long while and there are things I dont want to post on the net about it. It will be cool when finished. Im currently in debate about whether to extend the WB from 90" or not. Mine has had a front wheel base extension, and I was thinking of maybe taking the rear wheels back 5 or 10 inches.

It might have even been a s2, used to have different steering arms and things. The plan is to be road legal

Havent got too much done lately. A flatmate moved out so I got to move it into the garage.

Got the fire wall finished Image

Also got a wing and grill in place, just have weld on a couple of brackets for the grill
Image

Modified a SIII brake pedal to take the range rover booster and master cylinder, was a bit of a pain because the studs in the cylinder line up with the sides of the pedal box

Ive got a bit of a problem with clearance under the bonnet as well, the master cylinder resivior hits the bonnet so I might just remote mount it like the SII setup

A bonus of the IL6 is that there is plenty of room to mount a couple of intercoolers up under the bonnet

They're S4 RX7 top mount intercoolers with the top trim pulled off. One was with an engine that I rebuilt and I swapped the other one for a laser cut exhaust flange, think they are pretty cheap on trademe though. The injectors on the top there are rx7 as well 550cc ill use them as secondary injectors instead of replacing the standard ones

are you going to bang a turbo on there?

Looking good. At the rate you're going, you will have your LR done in no time 8)

Not quite, 2 turbos

Image

T25s with T2 centres and T3 front covers, Its much easier to make a manifold for twins, only 3 pipes to each turbo flange.

Will get some flanges laser cut and steam elbows this week hopefully
