Correct. Darin Neeley has done it. Moved cab approx 4", so auto is in std position and engine bolts up without having to alter firewall. I think truck has been re-wired to 12V also.
COnversion needs a few mods like power steering etc. Alt in std position is low and easy to fill with mud so needs to be relocated etc. Auto trans from the Infinity is mixed and matched with the Safari auto. Most people change valve-body and go to manual shift auto too.
Is also a trials truck running the VH45. Was originally a full body SWB.
Will be a few more VH41 / 45 powered trucks hitting the winch comp scene early/mid next year.

I would be interested in knowing what sort of custom adapter they have used and weather the gearbox has been moved for it to clear the firewall.

There are some clowns out there for sure.
Southern Cross were the same pullers that told me I was wasting my time looking for genuine Nissan manual locking free-wheel hubs. The bloke tells me they've got a VH41 powered shorty that dynoed at 1,234,567KW at the wheels (or something like that) and that they only use AVM hubs and have had no problems, and so I should buy some AVM's off them to put on the race truck...

That all depends on how much you are able to do yourself and what you want out of the truck.
Im very happy with the Holden 5.0 i put in mine. As far as costs go you will be lucky to have change out of 7g depending which motor you go for and what it sets you back.
You cant buy bolt on adapter kits for the VH's like you can the holden and chev's (i think they are currently being designed). You can fit the VH's to the patrol auto but if you have a manual you will have to get something custom made which will start to cost you.
I agree with you mitch about the AVM's, we had a set on dads truck when it was still a n/a diesel on 33's and they only lasted a couple of months.
