auto locker
looking at buying an auto locker for the front of my surf, whats involved in installation? been quoted 1000 drive in drive out but can obviously get the locker alot cheaper and interested in putting it in my self or at least doing some of it. I assume the diff has to come out for a start so even pulling it out and putting it back in might help on cost a bit, or maybe im just being a tight arse

Never argue with an idiot, they drag you down to their level then beat you with experiance!
hey rangimotors
me an a mate put a locker in front of our surfs it wasn't to hard getting diff out an putting locker in was easy it came with pretty straight forward instructions just make sure you have a set of feeler gauges so u can work out if the clearances are right. hope this helps if you got any over questions just send us a pm
cheers blair

A locker in the front of a surf is great, it gets around some of the IFS issues, but be carefull the front right cv is a weak point with a locker up front.
as for brand you can go for whatever you can afford, they all do a very similar thing and work in a similar way. the biggest trick is getting the backlash back to where it should be when you refit the pinion gear.
Also grab the workshop manual the pic's help for reassembly and give the torque settings go you can guess them

ok cool, i have an lsd in the rear so the locker up front should suit pretty well, even sounds like i can put it in. is 600 about the right price? Anything that you can do to avoid the cv issue? mines the 3.0d/t auto so its not to bad until i get carried away..

LSD in the rear and a locka in the front. That way the locka will only be working when in 4WD. The LSD in the rear will give you better road manners than the locka.

For about $620 plus shipping youd get a front an rear one here from US.
Think theyre $274us?
You get instructions for putting it in.
just dont give your truck to much death try to avoid getting wheels airborne when giving her tits.

sounds cheap, i really only want a front at the mo, the lsd in rear seems to go well. maybe i should see if anyone else is keen to do a bit of a bulk order might save on shipping. Or find a local one
so my electric hubs are still sweet? have thought about changing them but havent had any problems yet.

did you have locker in rear lsd in front? i thought it was better to go the other way mine's factory lsd in rear so thought locker in the front would be sweet. but maybe it depends what your trying to do with your truck, im more interested in getting more places and not to worried how it goes in circles..

Hey there
Yup she sure went places!! dragging a lot of other trucks behind!!!
Think about it. Ya got slippery wet ground, with the power on, the diff will lock! (driving both wheels at the same speed!) so the truck will go in any direction you want as long as it's STRAIGHT!! or blow out the CV as you hit some good hard ground with one wheel ... Hmmm not the desired effect.. but with lokka in the back it won't be as bad in the steering, as the front will drag the slower wheel !! & the rear don't have CV's
I had a welded solid diff in the back of a L200 & that worked real good as well! went where no other L200 had been before
& the dounut's are just a bonus side effect

LSD up front is more gentle on the front right CV not sure why they go more often you can get them hardened, or as some do overseas only run one hub locked (manual hub's) when turning and on good grip.
the problem is usually on a turn downhill, the diff locks and if you drive over it something goes bang, it could be an adjustment thing driving style thing but on the flat it will let you drive over it and unlock. The guy I know if he feels this in a turn (usualy at very slow speed) will stop back up about 30 - 90 cm and try again as soon as it unlocks you are fine.
I think it is worse in the solid axles like my hilux and this is why I would put the LSD up front and locker in the back in my situation. Idealy the locker in the front will help you climb and drag you through and on top of stuff rather than in the back push you. I would do locker in front on IFS as you know the power is getting to the wheel with traction LSD would be usless the power (LSD Break over clutch force) to the wheel with grip untill you overpower the clutch. Solid axles suit a LSD better due to the way they put their weight down.
At least this is what I understand LSD in front doesn't go as far as a locker but does give you some benefit of turning ability.

dnt think you can get a lsd for the front of a surf. deffinately but the lokka in the front. you are way more likely to lift a front wheel cos of the ifs. if you have the money go for front and rear. you wont go back it transforms the truck. oh and you have add 4wd system. not electronic hubs. it engages and dissengages at the transfer case and the diff. you can leave them in but for better fuel economy you can put a manual hub on the right hand side other wise you will be spinning the diff and drive shaft when in 2wd.

oh cool, thanks for clearing that up, as i thought at first locker in the front (for a start anyway) and it should help out lots, your spot on about the IFS lifting a front wheel and going no where. just got to find one now, best i go see rick and put my money where my mouth is

You can use the LSD from a supra rear diff in the front of an IFS surf, needs a bit done to make it fit though. There is info on the web about doing it. You should be able to find a supra rear for next to nothing, Its just the time to make it all fit. I bought a front IFS diff off trade me with an LSD set up in it. Its is now in the front of a mates KZN130 and it works well, not as good as a locker but for us it worked out a lot cheaper. Haven't broken any axles with it in there either.
I say it's Better to drive home un broken!!

Yes every one is correct
Yes you will go a little further with a lokka up front
yes you will go a little further with a lokka in the back but may be not as much as 1st
If i was to put a lokka in the front i would put a air lokka in that way you choose when it's on or off

Yea M8 That's mine the other truck in picture is my last truck
& yea had some nibbles most wanting to swap but at 12k im not really trying to sell but if someone wants to part with that sort of loot I will be sad to see her go...

I have an autolokka up front and have no problems with it. The only one I could think of was if you were to loose rear wheel drive, take out the rear driveshaft and had to come home on front wheel drive. I reckon I would only engage one hub and come home in one wheel drive like the very first cars used to be before they invented diffs. I find it good for pulling the truck out of steep river exits, and through mud. Got a factory rear in the back, would much prefer a Nissan LSD.
