dropping a 3L (2.8 ) in place of a 2LT ( 2.4 ) in a LJ71 ???

Post by adventures_more »

i have come to the conclusion that i want to find a good 2nd hand 2.8 ( 3L) & yank out my 2LT & drop it into my 89' LJ71 , ( will use the turbo , etc off the 2LT ), wonder what i have to do to make this happen , do i need to change the bellhousing &Clutch , etc if so which one ? etc, etc ..... ?

( Now saving up for a late 80's 1300L "Unimog" as have always wanted one, don't want to spend much on this cruiser , need a tad more power for those adventure trips & carrying all the gear )

a 3L diesel turbo from the later prado ie 95 would be the one to go for, I'm assuming its EFI as well
70 series prado (KZJ78) and 90 Series Prado (KZJ95)

The 3L should bolt in no problems at all. Just use all the parts (mounts, thermostat housing if different) off of your 2L. Fit an oversized exhaust from the turbo back if your wagon doesn't already have one. It should be outwardly indistinguishable from the original, so who would need to know? Would be so much easier than a 1kz conversion. Oh yeah, recon or replace the radiator as well. I didn't once and cooked a completely rebuilt 3L. Stung me an extra $1800.

so whats the difference between a 2L(T) & 3L , is is just the extra stroke & higher block ? i heard somwhere the bellhousing is different or something , 3L clutch bigger ?

Converting a 1KZte to fit a LJ70 seems money down the drain as there's a version that came out with one .

I've swapped the 2LT of my '87 LJ73 for an 3L. Didn't use the turbo, because the exhaust manifold of the older 2LT's ( pre 1990) don't fit an 3L. ( And because the turbo was gone, destroying the rest of my engine) It fits the bellhousing, you can use the engine mounts of your 2LT incl starter and alternator. The clutch of an 2LT doesn't fit but I'm not really sure about what clutch I've fitted.... Did use the stock radiator.... But overhere in Holland we call it tropical when outside temperatures reach 30 degrees C.

i,d be weary of throwing a turbo on a 3l or 5l as they go good for a while and then poooooof its rooted .haven,t done it but heard from a couple of mechanic mates that 3l/5l dont last with turbos

i`d second that, then you`ve also got the problem of supplying more fuel to go with all that boost>>>> not as simple as turning the screw in a cupla turns

I've seen two done.
One professionally on a 92 nz new 4runner with a factory 3L, apparently it goes bloody well and has had the turbo on for tens of thousands of kms.
The other is a LN130 surf that was a 2LT. It now has a 3L in place of the the original, fitted with the factory turbo plumming from the 2LT, but not the turbo injector pump methinks. It also goes well, but I can't attest to its longevity yet. Watch this space...
