Is my logic flawed or will this push the axle away from the truck without adding to the suspensions rigidity? It should only push on the center of the diff meaning each wheel will still move almost as freely as normal.

Looks damned simple too.

the leaves will hold it in place, and this will not decrease wheel travel, but it will help with load carrying

provided there is too much pressure on the coil it shouldn't push your body up. Doesn't decrease wheel travel, but does pride a 'pivot point' for the diff which can help with the articulation.
I am thinking of doing this under my surf, partly to assist when carrying 3 kids and a HEAP of camping gear.

Works real good, A mate has this set up, the coil has a ajustable platform to be able to ajust the ride height.
To get the best from this, he has also removed some leaves from the leaf springs.

richard in nelson runs this, cut most of the leafs out and you are away, he didnt do it for carrying loads but to give a softer ride and give more travel
