Hilux petrol repower
Hilux petrol repower
Hi im new to the site and i guess i better tell you about my surf, its a 1988 hilux surf pretty much standard with a mighty 3y under the bonnet.
As time has gone on the high fuel consumption and lack of power is starting to piss me off, and im thinking of an engine swap. Im looking for a 2litre nonturbo supra engine, like a 1ggue or something and i am asking for any tips and advice for where to look for the engine (as trademe doesn't seem to have much) and how eay/hard, problems, etc people may know of.
Ive had a look thru the forum and there seems to be lots of people dropping bigger, more powerful (and expensive) ones in, so thought id ask about this.
Or whether you think im wasting my time lol
Any help would be greatly appreciated!!

Yeah like i said i was looking for the nonturbo engine! but thanks for the help
I threw a non turbo 7m in my surf, uses the same amount of gas as the pox 3Y did, with the added benefit of more power, of course now it uses more tires

The 5m or 7m conversion will only use about 10% more petrol than the 3y but product twice the HP and 3 times the torque when needed - if you're comfortable with that then find a conversion and go for it...
The 1G conversion will produce nearly the same HP, but not as much torque and to get the power you need to scream it - not ideal for 4WDing but Tom, an old-timer from here had a surf with a 1G and he was ok with it.
The later 2.5 and 3.0 JZ motors are good but trickier to set up - same thirst for the liquid stuff tho... although better torque and power...
The other problem you have is IFS - you might get a better offroading performance increase from a SAS than an engine swap

Yeah thats a dam good point, but my truck has to be my daily driver as well, so its a bit of a compromise between the two, not ideal i know.
Thanks for telling me about tom tho, thats the kind of engine setup im after.

I am thinking of bolting a supercharger to mine and live with the economy. Looking at them all the fuel economy does not change much unless you look at a LPG conversion and as you want more go this makes the V6 Holden look good as you still have more power.
It depends what you plan on useing your truck for, as far as drivability goes the Holden V6 conversion is the best of all of them, the 5M and 7M are good engines fuel injected but are not that much cheaper to run and do not provide that much more go on the open road.
The supercharger looks good on paper but will have to see but as a temporary step before a V6 conversion seem's to be my best answer, just looking for a donor LPG holden...
Just my 2c

Steve.... I have a friend who ran a MR2 supercharger on a 2.8 oil burner block, it went awesome, if you want any info, just ask, V6 commo would be my weapon of choice for any future swap.....,
as for your comments o te 5M/7M, come for a ride, even drive mine if you want.............. you will find a huge gap between these donks and the 3y on the open rd, trail, or anywhere you like...they rock compared to stock engines, even the 1g-gue is far superior

Lovin my ol' 5M, would go the Commo V6 if doing a swap again

P.S engines...smengines................................
a good truck flexes like an 18YO gymnast (female), has shit loads of incredibly low gears, all 4 wheels diff locked, big feet, looks cool, has a decent winch, makes reasonable or good...*note STD engines will NOT achieve this pre-requsite
