help me spend my money!

Post by squeak »

Hey guys

i have an '88 SWB izuzu bighorn, i chose it cos it was the right price (cheap) and had more grunt than the other trucks in my price range.
only had it a few months, been to the waimak a couple of times, broken a few things lol.
it has 31x10.5 MT tyres otherwise bog standard.
ive got about 2k to play with and im not sure how to spend it. i think its supposed to have a rear lsd but if it does its buggerd and doesnt seem to work.

what would be the first thing to do? Spring lift? lokkers? body lift?

feel free to post any and every piece of advice, thought and opinion.

sell your rig and put it towards a hilux! :D
Na just kidding, lots of different options im in a similar position as you are, starting from scratch is kinda fun though, have you been to any of the shops/workshops i went in and talked to rick at 4wd accessories (i honestly couldn't tell you which is the best shop, im new as well) he was really good at asking what i wanted to acheive with my truck and pointed me in the right direction, what parts are you breaking? might be worth looking at what you can make stronger or which parts you can improve to take the stress of the broken area's..

If the tyres are more than or close to 1/2 worn put new rubber on 33x 12.5 15"... You may need to do some cutting &/or bending to fit em in but tyres #1 on list worth every cent and 33" will give more grnd clearance & and look MEAN!!

Make sure you have real good
tow hooks !!
Recovery ropes !!

Then do spring lift
Body lift will need cirt $400 min

Then go the lokker's

so For 2k you should beable to do the tyres $1500 & rear springs $250-$300 front is torsian so you can adjust it up

Good luck !!!

OK I would do everything in this order

1) Recovery gear if you don't have any people may not pull you out. and a snorkel if you are thinking about going anywhere near water.

2) Suspension (spring) Lift to allow for bigger tires later, coil spacers or longer springs are fine look up Rick as suggested or talk to Chamberlains you want about 50mm as that is about where the std ifs will give up anyway.

You can do a rear lift and wind up the torsion bars in the front to save money but this is a temporary thing and will mean you need to get number 3.

3) a locker in the front diff will help you go further especially when you lift a front tire.

4) Bigger tires these do make the biggest difference and with the locker on smaller tires being very close second. (poss a body lift at this point buy not sure about an Isusu?

Oh and join a local club, they and ORE have training day's and regular trips most of the time they can be done on 31" tires with some tows in the muddy stuff but getting stuck is half the fun. and driving things better setup viehicles get stuck in is even better

This is what I would do anyway and it would mean the least trimming and

1. Hooks

2. Strop

3. Body Lift

4. 33's

5. Then spend the weekend busting shit

6. Replace all the broken shit with the remainder of your money

Well thats what i did anyway

Simon,
I'd personally go for recovery gear, and perhaps a snorkel and start doing a few trips.
You might find that after a few trips you have more idea on what mods will be the most beneficial for the type of driving you intend to do.

Keep an eye out on the trips section, and hook up with some of the lads in your area, they will point you in the right direction.

like everyone else, I would kit out your recovery arsenal first.

Then take the LSD out if it is indeed an LSD, and get it shimmed to tighten it up, so it works properly.

Then get 33s if your tyres are getting worn. Maybe even a set of 33s on white spokes with tubes as an offroad set of tyres and keep the ones you've already got, for the road.

I took my truck from this (31" Maxxis Buckshots):

to this:

which meant that I could do this much easier:

... for under 2k.

Now, after a 50mm body lift (very cheap), 33" Maxxis Mudzillas on new rims and a new solid rear bar to remove some excess overhang and improve departure angles the truck is more than twice as capable and I'm happy with it for now.

I figure that if I start doing suspension mods I'll just start risking extra problems (at this stage).

Obviously rated tow hooks and recovery gear are the first thing to do.

Take what you want from that, and don't be afraid to ask plenty of questions. I took a few months to decide what I wanted to do, or not do.

mint thanx heaps

thats givin me a few thigs to think about. ive got a strop and theres a hook on the front that looks pretty factory (black) got nothing much on the rear. last time i got pulled out back wards we just looped the strop around the bar my tow ball is on and took it easy.
the part i broke last time was my starter motor, got stuck in some really smelly thick mud, so glad i wasnt the one attatching the strap that time lol.

a training day sounds like good times, is there one planned soon??

Need to know what area you are in ;) they are spaced out everywhere but usualy well advertised in advance and usualy in warm weather.

As far as looping a rope around anything to pull you out you may find you are handed a shovel one day.

if you have a towbar then you have something mounted to the chassis pretty well all you need is a mounting and hook or two on there and you are good to go :) mounting them upright is a nice thing too, mean's the rope strop is less likley to fallout.

no matter who you go out 4wding with if you are unsure about something ask, we were all Noob's once and some like myself still have noob day's
