60 series running gear in SOA BJ70

Post by Thrupp »

Hi, I am thinking about SOA my BJ70 and can get cheap access to the front/rear axle shaft from a 4 speed HJ60. Everything from brakes to drive shaft. I am hoping this will offset the lift a bit. Has anyone done this? How much extra width can I get? Is it worth it? I am hoping everything major "just lines up". It also doesn't have power steering and mine does? Planning on putting 35's on. Any input appreciated.

Cheers,

Mark

search out wopass's thread and photos, he stuck 60 series SOA stuff under his rusty old 40 series, Oh and try Nibby's thread as well coz I think he did 60 series SOA as well..... a wealth of information on both threads

you may need to PM wopass and ask him for the link to his conversion. I'm not exactly sure where it is, if there is one.

I'm just a little bit confused.
Are you planning on putting complete 60 running gear under your 70. how are you planning to get extra width :?: :?:

I was wondering If I could just put from the drive shaft back in. So from the 70's driveshaft bolted into the 60's diff housing and everything from the diff housing out to the brakes from the 60 series. I am pretty sure the 60's have a wider platform than the 70's. I hope I have not confused you more. This might not work or it might gain no extra width? I getting some measurements done in the next few days. I saw a guy on the IH8mud forum had done it but I can no longer find the thread.

70 series is narrower track than the 60 series  slap 60's running gear in and increase stability by a long way :D wider for teh win !

Awesome, do you have a rough idea how much wider they are? Coupled with rims with a big offset, I am hoping to stabilize it a bit more.

Cheers,

Mark.

You learn something new everyday. I always thought it went up in width from the 40 thru to 80. how wrong was I

should do.

its a good idea to contact your certifier before you start and check everything with him before you do it. That way you can't go wrong.

70 series is about 20mm wider than a 40 series and 60 series is about another 60mm wider again I think?

40 and 70 series have the same length long axle and different length short axles and I think 60 series has the same size short axle as a 40 series and a longer long axle :?:

me and phil found that out, when we thought we could just bolt the 70 rear straight into my 40.

So I am little confused now. Will the gear 60 gear "bolt" in to the 70? Or shall I get my friend to take some accurate measurements? Or do I need more parts? I am getting the parts of a rolled vehicle with a crushed roof. Cheers.

if your doing a SOA it will require welding new spring perches onto the top of the axles so it wont be a straingt bolt in, you'll also have to lengthen your drive shafts

What is required to lengthen the drive shafts? I was going to weld new perches on then roll the whole axle housing on the front forward about 30mm or so to offset the lift. What to do about the back? Cheers.

how much, Phil will probably buy it off ya. I don't need to swap, coz Phil welded the mounting points on the 70 rear to match the 40 springs.

dunno but if its only a small amount you can put spacers between the flange and driveshaft

nah I dont want to sell it, I've got a complete 40 series front and rear ends with weeds growing through them in the back yard for spares but I can only use the diff heads and long axles for my truck, 70 series stuff would be much more useful

and yeah phil's been drooling over them

Also is there any shocks that anyone recommends? I would like to get maximum articulation for the SOA setup. I don't really have huge amounts of weight in it any time. What have other people used? What ride quality/cost etc? I haven't explored that side of it yet.

Thanks,

Mark

source a longer driveshaft with same flange bolt patterns and then get it cut down to the correct length for your 70 and balanced..

Thrupp wrote:What to do about the back? Cheers.

try, with perches ready to weld but still loose and the u-bolts done firmly but still loose enough so you can jack the pinion flange up to turn it a bit, ya just have the weight of the vehicle sitting on the rear spring pack and can very slowly jack the pinion flange of the diff up till the face angles at the rear transfer output... the tighten u-bolts fully to hold in place and can then tack weld the perches in place too...

also be aware on the front diff, when puttin wider 60's onto the front, you may find that to keep your springs in the stock location, you may have to adjust the diff perch as the pumpkin may get in the way.. especially as it will be turned up like you say...

well, it makes sense to me anyhoo...

and the 60 series diff is approximately 2 inches wider than a 40 series track and slightly wider than a 70's..... :D

I reckon it would be easier for you to stick with the 70 diffs and just run a good offset on your rims. The rear driveshaft will fit straight back on with no modification. The front needs to have a double cardan joint fitted so the front can still drop away easily, and the length is also modified. the 70 stuff is going to cost you $0 and you mentioned earlier that you'd do the wide rims anyway. If you are keen to fit the 60 gear then As Nibby mentioned, the rear diff will bolt straight in with new perches on the diff, but the front will be a hassle. We ended up shifting the spring mounts on the body so the U Bolts didn't interfere with the diff housing. and by the way, power steering doesn't affect how either diff fits as you have a power steering box not the power assisted rack and pinion fitted to some cars. Good luck with the conversion whichever way you decide. If you need any assistance Nibby and/or myself have done both conversions. We've fitted 60 gear to his 40 and i've recently done the SOA on my 70. You could almost call us experts

Thanks for that guys. I think I will just stick to the 70 series gear if it is going to be too much hassle. A few mates and I have some time off around the 27th of August so I am planning on doing it then. Ill let you know how it goes. cheers.

Hi, just a thought, you may be able to get some extra width on your 70 front by doing an IFS Surf Hub Swap, haven't done it but maybe worth checking out to see if it is feasible.

good point h20... for the small gain in width with the 70's and 60's diff swap, do the rims... saves a lot of feckin about...!

good luck... and do a write up with pics of what ya do dude.. :D

if you really want extra width, why not look at spacers.

But remember if you go wider you should check that nothing rubs when you turn lock to lock, coz you would have pushed your wheels out further.
