Check the details on your antenna, some must NOT be earthed. They usually say "ground independant" antenna somewhere...

Can't say that i've seen one like this yet. Learnt something tonight, COOL.

My aerial is tuned - doesn't require a ground plane - about 300mm high and mounted on my left windscreen pillar

The advise I got when looking for a suitable PRS for the cruiser was

I'm a GME Electrophone fan! A TX3200 is all you need. As for the aerial I'd suggest getting a flexible topped mopole (CD51-68-70) from RFI in Auckland.

BrentC, what's up with your images not loading lately? I've noticed 2 images (the hut and this one) of yours don't load because of the above error. Any idea why? Nobody else has said anything so I guess I may be the only one?? I'm on a NZ subnet (World eXchange).

Not very practical for vehicle mounting though? The radials will get broken.

Years ago you used to pay about $40 a year for a CB licence. But its all free now as is PRS (UHF CB).

Some commercil bands you still pay a licence to use but not CB or PRS.

is there much difference between areials?

Best place to mount it is where its not going to get broken off!

If you get a PRS (UHF) radio go for the steel one with what looks like a spring in the middle. These have a gain factor of 4.5 - 6 db which means your 5 watts into the antenna effectivly puts out a lot more. (every 3db is approximatley double the power).

Rubber ducky types or straight elements have no gain.

If you ran a separate earth strap/cable for standard antenna mounted on alloy bars, would that remove need for 'ground independant'?

Alloy does not matter it is still earthed to the car and conducts very well.

Ordinary aerial on the bullbar is fine except you have to watch where you put your bullbars!

Hows it Guys,

Jst surfin the site n came across this thread n went surfin n came across this unit:

http://www.dse.co.nz/cgi-bin/dse.storef ... View/D1863

Catalog No. D1863

I know its abit pricey but i'd buy it if i had the cash lol

Jst a thort on mounting the aerial, well its more suited to split windscreen 4x4's,

Mount the mounting bracket(custom-made or included 1) of the aerial on the botton sill of the windscreen, in the middle, running up the windscreen, depending on where u put it & how long it is, if u put it on the bottom put a ringlet on the top sill like a fishing rod, lol, it'd b good if the coil of the aerial was roof line height, then it'd have the bend but then ya wudn't want to hit anything solid at that point or see ya later aerial.

I had the thort thinking of my own landy, might actually do it depending on the aerial
