Eyre Creek

Post by Mikey »

Did the Eyre Creek trip last weekend with some of the guys from the club but have only gotten around to posting a report now . Bloody good trip and I would recommend it to anyone. We got good weather although it was about -9 overnight which resulted in an ice covered tent, as well as my sleeping bag being covered in ice too .

An excellent trip; that I look foward to doing again.

Cheers
Mike

Hi Mike, looks like a good trip!
Our club has a trip to Macetown next Sunday, thought I'd take a look and see what the river looked like this afternoon. 6" of ice on the first river crossing, so goodness knows what it's like further up the river.
We've had monster frosts in Arrowtown all the past week, all around 15deg jobs.
Unless we get a big thaw this week, doesn't look like we'll be doing that trip...
Cheers, Colin

HI Colly,

We went to Macetown yesterday on a club trip (sunday) - well we tried. Beaten by the ice.
It was absolutely amazing, one crossing was an ice bridge, drove completely across the top of the Arrow. I hate to think how things would have gone if one side would have given way as we were well above the water. One crossing was just going to be to much and tie was marching on so we never made it in. Long crossing before the 2nd gate was particually difficult, after crossing in on the way in and breaking off chunks of ice (measured 24cm thick) coming back we'd made an ice dam with floating ice bergs, very hard of the front of the trucks. Great fun 8)

PS, Make sure you have at least one set of decent chains, preferably 2!Good luck with your trip.

Must try and get some pic's up.

And that's the ones we broke through, can't imagine how thick the ones we didn't break through were. Good photos though, we will have to organise an Association trip down that way for next year. Have never done that track.

Al good plan but it looks like Nissans need to go in pairs so they can get unstuck ;)

Didn't see any toyota's being towed! but there were two nissans on ropes in those photo's  One pulled by the trusty Toyota!

  8)

Looks like a good trip I will be up for it. what was the water levels like with the melt happening? or was most of it ice? How much sun was up there or is it deep in the valley?

As for the Nissans, my little Mistral didn't need a tow the whole trip, and also had to give one of those Safaris a snatch off a particularly steep bank, before I climbed up it without to much fuss. Got to love Swb :D

As for the water levels, they were fine while we were up there but I'm not sure what it will be like with spring melt. There were washouts, where it looked like a lot of water had come down at some stage. A snorkel would be highly recommended though.

The Valley does get a good amount of sun once it finds it's way over the hills. It is dam cold until that occurs though
