80 series VX Landcruiser Chassie Crack

Post by stompin »

Hey guys,

Finally got the engine recondition sorted in my cruiser, how ever while they were swapping out the radiator, they found a crack in the chassie arround the power steering racksome where? (so im a bit vague but the trucks in chch and im in wanaka so im only going off what im hearing) I remeber reading about cracking chassies on 80 series vx landcruisers but cant find the posts.. Is this a normal place for it to crack?

Are there any other spots i should get checked while they fix this crack?

Looking forward to finally getting my cruiser going.......

Hey mate yeah probably not identified as being normal but it is common, this is the only place ive ever come across any fracturing of the chassis, these trucks also have a common build up of water down the pillars if the water outlets are blocked(providing you have the sunroof model.

Just a bit of useless info for ya

Jungle had this problem on his 80. After welding it up a few times he got a strengthening bracket off Howard at Mudhog 4x4 (09) 836 4909. I believe it hasn't been a problem since.

Oh the drama.

Fitted aftermarket kit but the original cracks in the chassis were not fully repaired. Within a year the chassis had fractured again and taken the new plates with it.

Did complete over haul and removed panhard rod mount and cut chassis cross brace. Built up the chassis rail with 5mm plate and plug welded it. Welded panhard rod mount back on top of chassis rail. Also welded fully around the anti crush sleaves on the inside of the chassis rail. Infact, we welded the new 5 mm plates to the crush sleaves so the load was fully distributed. These sleaves are where the cracking begins.

Hope some of that helps.

Give Howard a ring and he can organise the first set of plates for you and if they ever fail then you can rebuild the chassis like i did.

Good luck.
