Anyone ever been here? Any idea how long it takes and what difficulty it is? A friend mentioned that he had been up there a while back. He got past the A frame hut at the top of the range and then decided to turn back because it got a bit much for him when he was up there on his own in his shiny ute. I realise that it's not going to be serious or anything.
If it's of any interest I might head up there for a look at some stage.

Yep it's an OK road, but nothing really great. The 4x4 part is relatively short. it only starts happening after the A frame hut. DOC don't like people driving past the hut, there was a sign before the hut, saying no vehicles past this point - but it mysteriously disappeared.
You could drive your ordinary car, maybe not if its a boy racer car, to the A frame hut any way.
Good views on a nice day and after the A frame it is a bit rutty and has one part whch can be a steepish hill climb with a loose rotten rock surface. At the end of the track is a bog, which you WILL get stuck in. But your not supposed to go in that either and really that is the end of the track, its a turn around and come back out the same way you went in.
The gate is often locked at the bottom of the track as well. You have to cross a farmers property to get there, although it is a paper road, its good manners to ask the guy on the way up.
Ring the local DOC office and they will tell you if the gate is locked. They used to be very protective of this road and wanted to keep all vehicles out. We have been up there a few times - its boring now!
The river can be quite fun, you can hop in by the Ashhurst bridge and work your way up to Raumai or further and then hop back out on the road again to go up to Takapari road.
You have to watch the river level though and even when low there are some deep holes (which change) that a couple of people have drowned thier trucks in.

I'm keen on going for another look on my Surf but only got A/T tyres.. hope they ok for it..
Or is there anyone in this region keen for some mud play nearby?.. Ashhurst river? I wanted to try 4x4 system on my Surf..

Yer its piss easy, not really worth it unless you have a mint day, then the views are nice. Better to go up there and go hunting for a couple of days.
