BFG or MT/R

Post by Engineer »

Polls says it all,
currently running 31" Pirrelli Scorpion Muds but going bigger and i wouldnt buy the pirrelli's again.
Ive read all the topics regarding both these tires and im still undecided. It seems to be a pretty close 50/50 split for both.
Thanks Ryan.

working in a tyre shop, the main points I've seen/heard are that MT/Rs are soft and puncture easy.

The BFGs will out last anything. They will separate before you can wear them down.

My choice would be the BFG any day over the MT/R.

Ive driven with both BFG's and MTR's. I would vote BFG's anyday. They are a tad more expensive but are probably worth it for the extra life and grip you will get out of them. I had BFG's on My LR in 32's, but sold them because I went 35. Ive now got maxxis trepadors to go on, but I would be keen for a set of BFG's once the trepadors wear out (which may be never seeing as my truck doesnt go  ).

I forgot to add that my dad put second hand 35's on his patrol about 2000-2001, and didnt get rid of them until last year. And that was with it being used as a daily driver everyday. Only got rid of them because the tread was getting low, and put a set of BFG at's on and runs creepys in the weekend because they come in a 16" rim (had problems with stones jamming between the caliper and the wheel with 15's. Couldnt get a set of 16" bfg's at the time.)

Interested in why you dont like the Pirelli's as the BFG are 3 ply sidewall made in the States and the Pirelli are 2 ply sidewwall made in venuszula. Tread patterns are the same

I ran 30x9,5x15 on a 413 for 5 years then put them onto my Jimny before going to the pirellis in the same size becasue i wanted new tyres for the nationals. I'm putting new pirellis on again fo rthis season as my co-driver is buying my old ones for half of what I have to pay for my new ones. Absolutly love the pirellis.

The BFG's will separate long before you ever wear them out

I do a fair bit of street driving but want good offroad tires when offroad.
Over one year the pirelli's have worn 6mm, however still go goodish offroad.
Never had a problem with them apart from the wear which im not getting to worried about as theyre a mud tire. Theyre strong an never had any punctures or torn the sidewalls, the side lugs are great, good grip. I am after a longer wearing good 33" tire.
And the BFG's having very similar tread pattern is what got me interested in them along with the stories of good wearing.
And heard so many good stories about the MT/R

those new kuhmos look good. the bfgs are great and have good mileage but cos tyou quite abit more. they mrts work well on a surf. thought you have to lower the pressure and spin them pritty fast to get the best out of them. stick blairs m8s ones on and go for a spin and see what you think. the doubt the bfgs would be any better than what you got in the mud so there is your comparison. havnt done enought ks on my mtrs to tell how long the last yet.

probably will come down to price. you normaly seem to get some good prices tho you did on the perellis. doubt youd get the mtrs cheaper than i did though! see how you go.

I have had my MTRs for the past 10,000kms of which would be about 80% on road, they seem to be wearing quite well. They seem ok offroad, but have heard alot of stories about cut sidewalls. The main reason I chose them though was the price.

Ive been told bout these kumhos, but havent heard many stories bout them so id rather stick to what people know.

I paid $343 ea for my 33x12.5x15 Kumhos from 4wd accessories in CHCH. BFG's I found bulged too much and the MTr's well don't get me started. I think they are one of the worst tyre I have ever run on a truck.

you have to remember that Al runs a big safari and you are in a surf. I dont think you would have problems with either of the tyres he dislikes.

Get your prices then try the tonys tyre service website and tell them you are in chch. I should be able to get you cheap/beer freight to invers.
