Tired 2lte

Post by Macca »

I have a 2lte engined surf. it has done 250k km and is starting to get a bit greedy on oil and a bit smokey. Although it still runs fine and isnt causing aproblem at the moment i feel it may need some attention in the not so distant future. I dont want to spend heaps of money as im a poor uni student. Would i be better to:

A-reco the engine(do it myself if at all possible)
How much would you expect to pay in parts to reco an engine (im mechanically inclined and have access to a good workshop)

or

B- would it be better to swap it out for a 3l 2.8ltr engine?
(how much would you expect to pay for a decent donk)

I want to keep running cost to a minimum but still want some grunt to tow a trailer.
Any thoughts would be great,
thanks Grant

if your gonna do an in place re co, make sure you REEEEAAALLY CLEAN THE SHIT OUT OF THE ENGINE BAY,STEAM CLEAN THE PHUCK OUT OF IT.

so when your doing the job you wont get any "bits" or "pieces"..dirt and grime.. caucht up,falling into your nice new oiled bearings etc when you go to put them in, ...

short story: i knew a guy(not me)who rebuilt a 400 small block chev 4 bolt mains. spent megga dollars on gucci cool forged flat tops and chuur megga cool rings, etc etc etc.. spent a lot of money on it, did a really nice job. started sweet, ran sooo nice.... drove it to the end of the workshops road and back, smoke pissing out of the exhaust... heres the not cool bit.

when he grit blasted the valley cover and manifolds etc... he diddnt clean it properly  ... sand, grit, dirt and moving parts do not mix well. basiclly,,,, he took 10 grand worth of motor and blew it up.

moral of the story = CLEAN, CLEAN, CLEAN,... these are also the 3 main rules for engine rebuiling
If you already know everything, DON'T ask bloody questions!!

D'you blokes know of a good source of info for rebuilding 2.4 TD motors? I know you'll all say it's better to replace 'em, but Pinky thinks its possible to rebuild for cheaper.

For that matter - is there a really good manual that you would recommend?

Suggest you don't mate - only dial-up here and my PC will die screaming!javascript:emoticon(':D')
Very Happy

Thanks though - what do those manuals cost? Might be worth having as it seems as if my 90 surf is going to be taken to bits piece by piece.....

Hey. I was faced with this problem a few years back my self on my old surf.

If you are going to do a recon, make sure you get the head crack tested and the same with the turbo housing and manifold!!

Can you tell me, is it the tin rocker cover motor you have or the ealier generation with the alloy rocker cover??

I had the early motor with the alloy, so it was a definate throw away!!!

I concluded, and that was after extensive research, that the best and cheapest option was to throw that engine away and source another 2lte engine, between the years of 1990 and 1991. They are the second generation tin tops with out the efi.
Other option was that if you couldn't find the non efi ones, your intake manifold and injector pump would fit off your origional engine.

You can pick up a new donk for $4000, i got one for $1500 from a wreckers in Hamilton to do mine.
Then decided not to, and bought the Terrano

GO FOR THE 3L OR 5L HIACE !!!

DONT WANT TO RIP YOURE HEART OUT BUT..........DONT WASTE YOURE TIME AND WALLET ON 2LT OR E ENGINE THERE A MONEY PIT THAT YOULE NEVER SEE THE BOTTOM OF

YOU CAN DEVELOP THE L ENGINE WITH A FEW SMALL IMPROVING UPGRADES BUT IF YA WALLETS PRETTY FULL GO FOR THE 1KZ-TE(AND DONT LISTEN TO THESE WANKERS SAYING THAT THE INTERCOOLED ENGINE IS BETTER COS THERE NOT)!!

FROM CUMMINS ENGINES TO JAPAS (JUST ASK) :D

You talk about improving the 3l with a few upgrades. What sort of thing are you talking about with this? Id love to put a 1KZ in but as you say they are a pit pricy. Im looking for the chaepest option as far as rebuild?replace and also for general running afterwards.
thanks, Macca

SORRY MACCA I MEANT THE 2LT AND E YOU CAN DO A FEW IMPROVING MODS TO THE ENGINE .........................

THE REASON THESE ENGINES CRACK HEADS IS BECAUSE EXHAUST TEMP THAT GETS TRAPPED AROUND THE HEAD ,THE EXHAUSED EMMISIONS ARE GETN PASSED THROUGH REAR OF YOURE TURBO NOT FAST ENOUGH,BY INCREASING THE SIZE OF YOURE EXHAUST FROM THE TURBO BACK(2.5")YOULE INCREASE THE GAS FLOW AND WILL SHOW A DECENT POWER GAIN. .ALSO UPGRADE YOURE AIR FILTER TO SOMETHING MORE FLOWING (K&N,UNI FILTER ,ETC).EVEN LOOK AT A SMALL BONNET SCOOP OR VENT.(IF YOU DECIDE TO GIVE THE OLD GIRL A BIRTHDAY MAKE SURE YOU DO THESE MODS :!: :!: )

ITS ALL ABOUT COOL AIR COMBUSTION THATS THE SECRET TO JAP OIL BURNERS
