Buying new 35" tyres

Post by Smurf »

I have just bought myself a set of 35" Creepy Crawler tyres.

Just thought I'd put up a post offering the reasons why I chose them, it might or might not provide food for thought???

After reading everyones opinion on different tyres on the forum, and watching a few vids of them in action, I thought I'd go with either a set of Goodyear MT/Rs or Creepys for my Surf.
I put a bit of time into checking out specs for different tyres on the net and I have posted some of the info at the bottom of this really long winded post...

I eventually decided to go with a set of Creepys, (which would have originally been my second choice) after seeing that they have a much deeper tread, bigger void area in the tread, and measure up a lot truer in height as a 35. They also have better sidewall lugs than the other tyres I was considering.
I could have got the MT/Rs quite a bit cheaper than the Creepys but the extra tread depth and height, and stiffer sidewalls (less sidewall damage hopefully) of the Creepys made me change my mind on the MT/Rs.
We do more mud orientated 4wding than large rocks, so I think these tyres will do me well. (Proof of the pudding and all that...)
I know they are a lot stiffer in the sidewall than most but I have been running a set of 33" crossply Denman Groundhawgs for the past few years and I think they are great. They have quite stiff sidewalls and need to run at 8 pound or less to bag out. But they grip well and clear well too. One thing about the Groundhawgs is that they are directional, which the creepys aren't.
I also have a set of 33" Hankook tyres and I thought the sidewalls were too thin, and bulged too much for my liking, I was very wary of sliding off a rock and cutting the tyre.

TYRE tyre height, height mm, tyre width, tread dpth mm.

MT-R, 34.7 - 34.8", 883, 12.5, 15.8,
CREEPY, 35" , 889, 13.5, 21.4,

I took my surf away for a two week trip down the west coast at Xmas. I ran the hankooks instead of the Groundhawgs I normally run and it was quite suprising how much I had to think about driving offroad, where to place tyres to get grip, how to tackle obstacles etc.
Had to find the loud pedal more on the Hankooks than I have to on the Groundhawgs.
It was also my first trip with a petrol motor(Supra 5M) after having had a 2.4 diesel Surf for 6 years before that.
Hopefully my new rims arrive in the next few days so I can get the Creepys on and go for a play.
