South Verses North, Which one is better?

Post by rokhound »

Just chatting with (someone I thought was) a mate (turns out he is a bit of a .........) who is up North. We were discussing the merits of the different terrain in each island and who gains a better overall skill base because of it.
I reckon he's wrong, he reckons I,m wrong.

Bring on your ideas from newbies, realative newbies and experienced drivers. Especially guys and girls who have done lots of "off the black top" work in both islands.

(sorry this post should not have been in tyres but hey, shit happens)

It appears we win already Mr Rokhound, your statement is flawed in the first sentence

funny how it also mentions a "shortcoming"

wived in wgtn for years and thought ralliwoods and the akas were cool, done heaps in bop and then that was my favourite, lived in nelson and didnt think much of that, now live in southland and sorry this is by far the best place, tauranga mud sticks to your vehicle, wellington mud is glorified puddle water, but southland mud, places to go, accessibility, lack of vehicles, terrain, you just cant beat it( and of course the west coast), so i would say south, 2 3rds of the country live in the north island, for that reason alone it has to be the south

South Island, I cant comment, have done a coast too coast drive, but was easy stuff. Rock crawling would be my ultimate, but we aint got too many rivers down queen street so I will have too say our farmland driving kicks your river driving  - comment purely pointed at Rok cos his rig sucks arse   Wheres all the rednecks strumming their banjos??

Depends what you like.

I reckon ya can't beat the greasy clay bush tracks in the waikato, bop, coromandel(sp?) and central plateau.

The west coast in the sth island gets close with the bush tracks, but its all rocky with the odd wet puddle. People go the westcoast for the mud,but it doesn't even come close

the south island for sure. we just have the best of everything down here. i have only seen north is. on dvd's and tv but i still think the south is best. it mite just be the cold making our balls as hard as steel, but whatever the many resons this is my playground and i wouldn't swap for any other place.

as for the north versus south thing, thats a nissan vs toyota type question i reckon..

depends what each driver gets accustomed to and what their rigs set up for..

cant comment on north island conditions, but i love the south island diversity... from thick mud to water, sand to boulders..

i dont care where, so long as i'm wheeling..

what he said

the missile is set up fro what i love doing and that serious mud/bush tracks which can only be found up here in the waikato/bop/comandel/king country and up north (ive wheeled in Kaitia...that was cool)...probably some down there in the south but ive never seen it.

i cant drive trials for shit as i havent had the practice but its fun

as for rock crawling...... i could do that but just dont get the opportunity.

so the upshot of my comment is..... i cant comment as ive never wheeled in the south

i havnt really done many bush type tracks. I have done tompsons from both sides and i really loved it and plan on doing it again. I mainly do the trials stuff cause that was mainly what the club i belong to was into. I also enjoy doing T.R events but hope to do alot more bush type runs so i can get more time in the idiot seat. As far as the best island to do it in goes, so long as you are out there wheeling having a blast, does it really matter where you are.
