Climbing rope recovery strops

Post by Azza »

I'm still gathering all the bits for my recovery toolkit, I had a thought that some of you might know the answer to;

As an ex-rock-climber, I got a heap of unused 11mm dynamic climbing rope lying around, can I use it for a set of cheap recovery strops :?:

Definitely not, it will not take the stress loads of your vehicle.

i had a dynamic climbing rope which i patted so there are three strands,
Great rope, i use it to tow trucks that are bigger then me.

all i do is pull untill i stop and then tell the stuck truck to drop its cluch and then let the rope do the work.

only very broke it once one strand went and it held together with the other two. once broken i tiped it for safty reason.

i am trying to find some more to make another one.

Only use it for three tows in any one day as the rope takes time to recover

Hi Jono,

I've used my climbing ropes for towing cars, which works really well because of their bungie type quality, hence why i was enquiring about whether you could use them for 4x4 strops... i like your idea about platting them into 3 strands, doing it this way should give about 15000lb breaking strain. :D

Do you know what the physics are in pulling out a stuck truck?

A good source of ex-climbing ropes could be you're local indoor climbing wall, under OSH regulations they are usually replaced every 12 months and are 'destroyed' by cutting into short lengths so that they can't be used for climbing, ie: a 50mtr rope would be cut into 20mtr lengths (which probably would still be ok for towing), if you could get friendly with the wall manager and convince them they would not be used for climbing you may be in luck

Alot of people may not let you come on a 4wd trip without the proper saftey and recovery equipment and I belive that climbing rope dose not constitute as recovery equipment :( why dont you get something like this that I got off tradme 2 years ago:-

4x4 SNATCH ROPE rated to 15,000 kgs
Brand new heavy duty 90mm x 12meters
long max. Reinforced eyes each end.
A must when going out in your 4wd .
Brought for $70.00

Got it from Falsgrave automotive

it is good shit for towing with but it is not a snatch strap for heavy vehicles, we use it to snatch quads out with but you will break your bike or your self before it breaks for that light stuff,11mm breaks at 3300kg 13 at 3900kg coloured ropes approx 20% stretch white ropes minimal stretch, i still have 100s of metres of the shit , handy rope but that is all, a small selection
