Thompsons Track

Post by BrentC »

Is this another new track to the top :?:

Image

If yes - it's no wonder DOC and councils get pissed off with 4wders - looks like the damage done in central otago

its inbetween Te Aroha and Matamata over the Kaimai's. the main track is quite a nice drive, that photo is just the summit track at the top. the main track from there heading over to Katikati is a lot more serious, only go over there if you are a very well set up truck and theres a couple of you.

Believe it or not, in the weather we had over the weekend, those guys have HUUUUUUUUUGE nuts for attempting that track!!!!!!! If you are lucky enough to get up there, its like a mud slide straight back down to the bottom :?

BrentC and others, be carefull not to paint these guys as the villans, they were just driving a track that was there, they WERE NOT the ones that created it, they have not strayed off a formed track, there is no indication that Doc does not want that track used and it has been there for as long as i can remember. It does not get alot of use due to the camber and roll over risk.

Some allways will say its the V8s with 35" tyres that do all the damage -- but is it :?:

I've not checked, but the Doc / private land boundary will be thru there some where - which makes it no better

I've actually always wondered why there was two going up let alone three?

I dont know man, soon there will be four tracks going up and then it will be shut down and I wouldn't blame them at all. Its all been said before.

Mate, there are almost four up there now, a 3 4x4 tracks, and a ATV track.

My comment (must be talkin Japanese again) was suppost to be takin in a "don't shoot the messanger" sense:

The issue is wider/bigger than this instance, the traffic that track see's on a weekly basis is phenomenal.

Address the wider issue such as exploring options for blocking the tracks to alow it to stabilise, don't lose focus by singling out these guys.

Thats what i mean rangie. We don't live in an ideal world were every one is born knowing everything, we are all learning still!!!!!! (that includes common sense)

In an ideal world, work would have been done many years ago to keep the track open to the sumit in good condition to prevent the temptation to stray to the easier line next to it up the grass.

Now the only option is to block the tracks to allow some kind of natural stabilisation to occurr. Also, some of the 4wheelers that tracks see's are of a rather tragic nature :x

Hey Guys my 2 cents, that track has been there for over 10 years commonly used by 2 wheel bikes (including myself)obviously its alot easier to fly up or down rather than using the other slippery clay tracks with massive water cut in them.
I personally havent used this track to either go up or down in a 4x4 truck and wouldnt recommend it neither due to the fact that my fat ass on the GQ or VX wouldnt stay in those ruts.

Ive been up the middle and right track (from that pics aspect) several times, and use the left one just for coming back down... generally due to there being someone else already coming up the other two

That was why the big :?: I have never been up there - it just reminded me of the mess made up on Old Man Range.

Maybe we need to run a dozer through to clean up the ruts etc

the Te Aroha side of thompsons gets regular track clearing and clean up days and is pretty close to needing another one, quite a few slips up there making the track tricky(for shineys)to get up without making a bloody mess(there was a few of these there on saturday)

i have never herd of any problems with the summit track and as far as im aware its not an issue, yes it does look bad, but it will get to the point where no one will be able to get up any of the tracks and it will get work done on it by the people that use it.

Thompsons Track

that was me and my m8s in that pic (not my truck tho :( ). that was the first time we ve been up thompsons so we definitley didnt make it. The reason we didnt go up the other track is because we drive our trucks to work everyday and those tracks are real skinny, so yea dont really want to destroy them too much

although my cherokee has all the traction aids etc its still as shiney as a shiney can be.... ive never had a single bit of damage going up the tracks. Scarier looking that what it really is.
