ORE Welly Training Day - October

Ok been discussing the next training day with Mark and October sounds good, more info will follow soon

Anyway, yes I was planning to hold an ORE Association training day in October for Association members and visitors (ie, general forum users, friends, etc). I am thinking Sunday 7 October as there is a central North Island trip that Wopass is organising on Labour weekend, and this will be a couple of weekends before that.

At this stage we will look to hold it at Aotea Block up by the Police College. We will cover failed hill climbs, articulation, sidlings, snatch recoveries and winching. Before we get underway we will go over vehicle setup and safety issues and give the opportunity to discuss recovery/safety gear that is required on most 4wd trips.

There will be a small $5 visitor fee for non-association members to ensure that we are covered for liability insurance purposes. This fee will be put towards a few sausages, patties, buns, etc on the day for lunch.

This will be primarily a fun day where partners and kids are more than welcome and will be encouraged to join in if they want to.

So... is anyone interested? There are no restrictions on vehicle setup as it will cater for all. Please post here to help us gauge interest.

I'll bring my airbag jack to play with, and I'll organise a couple of tirfors people can have a go with, and pegs to so we can peg out some easy hazards. if there is time afterwards there are area's to play in the block which is always interesting....

14th is out as this is the Deadwood (round of national trials in Welly), following week is Wopasses trip.

its about time a wgtn training day was done. theres been heaps of new members who want to learn lately and a training day has been throwin
about for ages

ill be cleaning the zuk while Jerry has his hook talk!! :lol:

3 Hours? I think you are mistaken....its more like 12 Hours and there is a test afterwards...Don't worry PR you wil get to hear it when a pile of us come down to hillbilly country (which includes me :twisted:

Don't get scared by this... I'm only going to allocate him 12 minutes of fame, then everyone has full permission to jump on him and rub his tow hook covered face in mud :wink:

Yep, judging by the overwhelming response there are heaps of new members out there that are interested :roll:

Is there any interest in this? Is the date not suitable for the majority? If I could get an idea of how many people might be interested before I go ahead and organise it that would be great.

Also, if we could keep the posts on topic that would be great. This is something that I thought there would be a lot of people interested in and it would be beneficial for us all if we could get this off the ground.

So... any takers? I'll be asking for help from a few of the regulars to help run things on the day, but we'll arrange that a bit later on as we get things under way. Cheers.

Mark, depending on exactly when I would be interested. It is one thing heading out on a trip, but knowing what to do in those unexpected situations would be great.
I will be a very possible starter, and thanks for trying to get this going

Who would be interested in making this a NZQA qualification as well? I have a mate who does a NZQA accredited 4wd training course who would be keen to come down and run us through it. It would be free because it is fully funded by NZQA. The only catch is that you would have to work through the theory side of it before the practical day, but he'd just send down the workbooks for us to work through on our own.

It's all very basic stuff and will cover most of the practical stuff we would go through anyway. It would cover the following unit standards:
- 17976 - Demonstrate knowledge of operating a light four wheel drive vehicle in an off-road environment.
- 17978 - Operate a light four wheel drive vehicle in an off-road environment.
- 20848 - Deomonstrate knowledge of and skills for driving a light 4WD vehicle on-road.
- 17676 - Carry out pre-start checks on a light motor vehicle. Start up and shut down the vehicle.

There is also an optional follow up assessment that we may be able to look into later for those that are interested in trip planning:
- 17977 - Develop a plan for a 4WD journey

I have already done the course and I found it pretty easy. There is a wee bit of study to do (probably a couple of nights - we could even arrange a study group one evening before the practical day) and the practical day on Sunday would probably be a full day, but I reckon that because we are doing it anyway we may as well make it a proper qualification. You get a certificate and everything.

So, anybody interested? Even the people that consider themselves competent 4wders can do this one just for the qualification. Once I get an idea on how many people would be keen I can confirm the details of it all with my mate. But at this stage I am still aiming for this to be done on Sunday 7 October.

Yes, the first part of that is definitely possible. The second part can not be commented on in a public forum :wink:

But seriously, it's not really something you need to cheat on... it's pretty damned straight forward for most people. If you are totally new to 4WDing then you may have to use a few more brain cells but we can all work together as a group and nut it out. There is a test to sit, but from memory it's mostly multiple choice.

Even Mike managed to pass it :wink:

There is a section about the do's and don'ts of recovery and it makes it quite clear that you shouldn't use tie down points, factory tow hooks and tow balls for recovery (plus other stuff). So yeah, it's covered.

At least if I take the courses I already know your current ability and recognise the prior experience leading to a more enjoyable day by all :wink:

Oh and as they are NZQA courses you can do them as part of your NCEA (Turoa & Mr O & Mitch etc)

McDonalds aren't too fussy as long as you can operate the chip fryer thingy with out sticking your hand in it and you remember to ask if the customer wants fries with the order :lol:

Actually you are more likely to take to the chip fryer with your 9" grinder and improve it :lol:
