axle seals

Post by Thrupp »

I am putting a locker in the front of my truck and when I removed the front left axle it didn't have much grease packed in it and oil came out. It does have an oil seal and that looked alright. The front right had heaps of grease and almost no oil came out when I pulled out the axle completely. Is it the grease that is doing the sealing and not the oil seal? Or is it not an oil seal, does it just stop it "sloshing around"? Any help appreciated thanks.

axle seal stops the oil from migrating down the shafts into the hub assembly, keeping the diff full.

i put new seals both sides every time you pull the axle out, cheap peace of mind, and be very carefull when re-fitting axle as the seals are easy to damage.
If you already know everything, DON'T ask bloody questions!!

Take note of which way around he seal was when you removed it. I know of a guy that put one in the wrong way, it leaked worse than ever.
I use a tool made from a tube, with a machined flange around it.

I am trying to replace the oil seal and cant get the left tie rod end off. How do I do this its a bj70 landcruiser. I need to get on the other side of the CV housing. So I need to take off the cv housing. The step I cant do in manual is remove tie rod end, it just says use special tool??? Cheers.

Unless you realy need to replace the king pln bearings there is no reason to take the swivel hub off , just remove the seal holding half plates , cut the rubber seal at the top, cut the new seal likewise, and refit the new one.
