Saturday afternoon Ashley track ramble

This trip is taking over from the Waimak trip that was sort of planned. For those dudes that want to look at a new place to test out your vehicles and yourselves then come along.
Venue: Ashley track to the Okuku confluence and then upstream to the bridge.
Grade: 3-4
Time: 1200hrs for a 1230 hrs departure.
Meeting place: Park next to Ashley river bridge just out of Rangiora.
Truck requirements: Mudtyres recommended but AT's will do. Snorkels. rated tow hooks and tow ropes.
I will be checking all tow hooks on arrival at the meeting place.

Hope they are not the standard ones that came on your truck Rik. It's just that it would seem strange for you (especially you!) to change the hooks, when the rest of the truck is sooooo standard :lol:

just a thought al,
this is my set-up

front has two hooks.

rear, i have an after market tow bar that has been custom built to handle the 9000lbs that the winch can handle. so i loop the recovery strop around it and connect with a rated shackel. but no hooks.

is this ok Al?

As a Newbie, I thought that rated towhooks were designed to bend at a know pressure and release the snatch strap. This stops the chance of flying hooks and ropes cause damage to vehicles/people???

i will get a rated hook tommorow for the rear so then no hassels.

hulux-happy, If the hooks on the front (as in photo ) are standard ones, and the bolts are into the standard captivated nuts, al - won't be happy.
You need Rated Hooks and at least 9.9 grade bolts, drill up through both sections of the chassie, fit a crush tube into the hole , and add a piece of extra flat bar on top rail of chassie, attach tow hooks with bolts through chassie and nylock nuts on top. Hope this make sence.

you'll definitely need to do that. Without trying to offend you or you're truck you are bound to get stuck :cry:

and will definitely need to be towed out. Probably by the Landcruiser that will be in front of you having just driven through with no problems

Just head up the track until you find some stuck trucks then you'll find them! But last time I did that I kept finding the wrong stuck trucks coming towards me and had to help recover them as they had sent the least capable one first and then couldn't get in front of it to pull him on so I hooked them on and backed up to the next exit (from the ruts - can be a long way some times)

when did that happen?, followed you towing a jetboat down Main Nth Rd yesterday afternoon and everything looked ok

Did you get that crowd "Check King" to suss out if the head is cracked or worped Steve? It didn't seem normal for the radiator reservoir to bubble and blow steam like that. Advise given to me suggested that you needed to check the cylinder head. I do hope towing the Jet boat didn't damage things faster. Was an awesome day on the water anyway dude. Not sure it was worth cylinder head problems though. :cry:

yeh it was fine antill it back to west melton. then it was bubbling out the overflow bottle and went on like that for a few minuts. i havn't got it checked by check king, just been doing online resherch and checking a few things. i am 90% sure the heads warped of cracked. and i wasn't even off=road when it did it. now the truck runs ok and dosn't overheat.

and anyway there's nothing qute like a v8

if the head had a decent crack it would over heat within afew blocks if you drove it.

i think its just the fact it was towing a boat and after the whole day it finally started to crack but going to take for a run today locally and see. if the motor blows after an hour of city driving then atleast it wont be far from home. if o.k. then get full head tests done to determine the next course of action. i know it was fine all the way back from west melton to linwood yesterday arvo so ????

id take your thermostat out just incase that was the problem. also with all tha muddy driving you have been doing lately have you checked your radiator for mud? take off the fan shroud and have a look through it, if you cant see through it then it only takes a couple of min to clip the grill off leaving it exposed for a good clean.
