could the thermostat be staying open cause this?

radiator is clear of mud so it has to be the head. if the is a problem. it ran a little hotter than normal for five minuts when we got back but it never went above halfway on the temp gauge then. and i drove it home and everything was ok? (normal temp

is it clear from the back? i always used 2 clean mine from the front after 4wding and it looked nice and clean until it started overheating and i had a better look behind the shroud. was fully bloked up, if i put the hose right up agianst the front it would just trickel out the back.

I'd get it checked Steve? You could flush the cooling system out just remember to put anti freeze back in. I hear without anti freeze you can damage the engine. Just what I've been told. Maybe you should start a new thread for this subject.

Check the fluid in your radiator for any signs of oily residue, can be a sign of a warped/cracked head...

radiator definitly clear in radiator. i just want to go on trip but dont want to be towed all way back to linwood from ashley the sucks for everyone involed. it has never had problem before yesterday and only after towing the boat did it overheat (half way on gauge), then it was fine on way home (temp 1/3rd on temp gauge)

im just getting up to temp now and radiator cap is off. there are no bubbles coming out radiator filling point and no oily residue yet?

will post more details once the engine has warmed up to operating temp.

ok had the truck running for 30 mins now and it got upto temp but never overheated so i dont know untill it is properly tested. i want to go to ashley but better not. :cry:

When the head went on my Prado, driving on the flat was fine, but any sort of load, ie hill, mud, trailer would make it overheat...

ok we went and to the mehcanic and he reckons that the radiator is blocked on the inside as when i said that using the heater it made the temp go down. i also told him there is no water loss, milky engine oil, bubbles in radiator, or and signs of a blown or warped head. just a once off 5 minut burst of steam from overflow bottle but no water loss. the truck runs cool and i can drive for 20 minuts and take the radiator cap off straight away (no cooling down time).

i then tryed a few thing he said like drive up hills and put in higher gear than normal to load engine. i did that and temp never went up higher. the gauge seems to work as it moves up and down at different times due to different driving conditions like hills and flat, slow and fast. but never went higher than normal.

so i took azza down the waimak along the same route as last sat. we gave her shit. still the temp never went up above normal.

so i will take the radiator to canterbury radiators tommorow and get them to do a flush.

cant see what else it could be right now?????????????

oh well i hope every one had a good time on the trip up ashley. i hope to go on the next trip thou. and aleast i did some mud driving today so not all bad.

As a temp fix Hulux, biff a bottle of Chemiweld at it. About $15-$20 from ripco, local garage, super cheap etc. Might keep ya going a bit longer

i take it you mean for towing cause it went fine all arvo and i went harder that ever in it. she never got hotter than its meant to. cheers rokhound for that.

One of my work trucks has the same problem. (hot when under heavy load). The chemiweld seems to have helped, I just wouldn't count on it being permenant. Fortunaltly, the truck is 12 yrs old and is the one that i use when I need one, so it doesn't get much use at all anymore :twisted:

chemiweld will not work, if the rad is blocked. best to flush it and see what happens. if it still gets hot then you need to look into it a bit more.

get it flushed and let us know how it goes after.

if you suspected a head prob get it up to temp, take the cap off and check for bubbles. You need to get the revs up to check it, you may not get bubbles at idle (my work truck didn't bubble at idle, but when I removed it she had 2 big cracks in 2 pots). Normaly when it's the head water use is the main sign. I use 16L from CH CH to Picton and back, and not a drop lost out of the motor (all via the exhaust).
now if you have heating probs when climbing a hill, check temp if it drops off at the top of the hill, it is more than likely your viscus fan, if it goes down slowly it will be blocked radiator.

Get a new thermostat when your at your supplies store as well!

The temperature should sit on or just below half way on the dial with the correct functioning thermostat in it, basically whatever the conditions, maybe rise a bit when slow climbing or lugging a boat up a hill.

It is important that the engine runs at a constant temperature as different metals (iron & alloy) expand and contract at different rates when subjected to temp changes.

Yep, quite right Gizmo.
Sorry i just assumed that a radiator check will ahve already been done. As you state, start looking for the easy stuff first, radiator, thermostat, air blocking etc. But after the easy diagnosis stuff has been carried out, and there is still a problem, you have to climb into the uglier shit and check it out.

cheers guys. i will do radiator flush frist then see how it goes, but it hasn't ever gone over halfway on temp dial. even when it steamed out overflow bottle yesterday. but if radiator ok then i will get the head compression tested and will proberly do anyway for peace of mind.

Yep fun couple of hours. managed to get the old pig stuck in a mudhole I can usually drive through, and Rik didn't even get his feet wet. Ashley had a bit of current flowing through though, washing the shingle out from under the tyres.
