oily intake manifold

Post by avercoe »

hi guys
just blocked off my egr valve on a 2-lt and noticed a bit of oil around the bottom of the pipe. stuck my finger in the manifold and its pretty bloody oily in there. guessing the seals in my turbo are shagged and letting oil into the compessor?? any ideas?
cheers

Check the breather hose from rocker cover to intake pipe, You'll probably find that is full as the same oil. This is blowby from the motor. Worn rings allows air to get past them and into the sump pressurising your sump, which then forces oil (fumes etc) up through your motor and through the breather hose into the intake pipe.
If you pull off the breather pipe while the motor is hot and running you will be able to see the fumes if this is what is happening.

I'd eliminate one possibility at a time but it is possible your turbo is leaking oil too. More likely to be the breather I would think though. Have a read through this thread, One of the guys on here recently had a leaking turbo on his wagon.

When I changed the head on my 1KZ-TE, I found the intake manifold to be coated internally with black greasy tar which was about 3mm thick. It took a week of soaking in petrol in a 25l container to get it to shift even when using a large bottle cleaning brush.

I put this down to the EGR system which I was blanking off at that time anyway. The vehicle does not use any oil between changes so don’t think it is a breathing issue. Also there was no oil/tar in the intake system prior to the EGR valve connection.

Perhaps this is the case with yours as well?
