This mornings effort...IFS Steering box mount

Post by Jafa »

Well I got kicked outta bed early this morning for farting!! chicks aye?
So into mounting the Surf steering box we go. 1st off I wanted it as far forward as possible and high enough so the pitman arm just misses the rail. Bear in mind this will be on coils so I have no leaves to interfere so I'm gonna use the surf pitman arm rather than try and find something flatter.
Have to make up an adapter to bolt onto the surf ball joint an thread intoi the end of my steering arm.
any way heres the pics

Nice, very nice!
You didn't think about recessing the mounts in to stop the tires rubbing on the box .... in my case I'm still on leafs so all it took was a 10mm recess to move in far enough that the leaf was the limiter and I"ve set the box as low as possable to flatten out the drag link as much as I could (reduce bump steer)

Thanks Reece, No i didn't think about that  ahh well too late now
I've never seen it recessed, you mean in the rail towards the engine eh?
Good idea....mebbe if it is an issue later I'll change it.

Masterful... I love it. One thought on the adaptor - have alook at the tie rod in the IFS setup - its a long rod with two tie-rod-end tapers at each end. cut one end off, then cut one of the tapers off the other end and you have a long straight forged rod with one TRE taper at one end - this is what I am looking at using for Conans - I'll have a 21mm thread cut on the end and use a Hilux TRE and tie rod (or 40-series tie rod - need to do some measuring first).

Have a look at this break-down. The relay rod is the part I'm talking about - chop one end off, keep one taper hole at the other...
